Abstract

The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine comprising an associated turbocharger, wherein gas leaked from the combustion chamber accumulates in the crank housing of the internal combustion engine and is conducted to the induction tract of the compressor of the turbocharger to be recirculated to the combustion chamber. According to the invention, prior to being recirculated to the compressor (8), the leaked gas is fed to a device (13) for cracking long-chain hydrocarbon molecules contained in said gas, the long-chain hydrocarbon molecules being cleaved into hydrocarbon molecules with a shorter chain length. The leaked gas is then fed to the compressor (8).
