A method for forming a water, oil, and/or gas resistant and/or impermeable product. The method includes (a) coating a product with a composition, the composition including: a protein, wherein the protein, is a plant-derived protein, an animal-derived protein, a fungus-derived protein, or any combination thereof; and/or shellac; and (b) heating the coated product. The coated product may be heated to temperatures in excess of the ignition temperature of the uncoated product and/or in excess of the thermal degradation temperature of the protein and/or shellac (e.g. to temperatures between 200° C. and 300° C.) without damaging the coated product. Water, oil, and/or gas resistant and/or impermeable products formed by the method may includes cellulose-based products such as a paper-, cardboard- or wood-based products. The products may form part of or all of a container for use in the food and beverages industry or an item of cutlery.
A method including applying a wetting agent to air-laid pulp to form an intermediate pulp and cold-pressing the intermediate pulp to form a moulded product. The pulp may be formed from a fibrous raw material. The wetting agent may include a functional additive such as a sol. A sol may include a solvent, an alkoxide, and optionally a catalyst. The air-laid pulp, intermediate pulp, and/or moulded product may be free or substantially free of thermoplastic polymers and/or hydrocarbon-based plastics. The moulded product may be a fibre-based bubble wrap. The fibre-based bubble wrap may be formed from reel-to-reel processes.

A sol comprising a solvent, an alkoxide, a catalyst, and a protein, wherein the protein is a plant-derived protein, an animal-derived protein, a fungus-derived protein, or any combination thereof. The sol may be used to immobilise pigment. The sol may be used to form a fluid resistant or impermeable barrier and/or a free-standing unsupported structure.
A method for forming a water, oil, and/or gas resistant and/or impermeable product is disclosed. The method may comprise (a) coating a product with a composition, the composition comprising: a protein, wherein the protein, is a plant-derived protein, an animal- derived protein, a fungus-derived protein, or any combination thereof; and/or shellac; and (b) heating the coated product. The coated product may be heated to temperatures in excess of the ignition temperature of the uncoated product and/or in excess of the thermal degradation temperature of the protein and/or shellac (e.g. to temperatures between 200 °C and 300 °C) without damaging the coated product. Water, oil, and/or gas resistant and/or impermeable products formed by the method are also disclosed. The products may comprise cellulose- based products such as a paper-, cardboard- or wood-based products. The products may form part of or all of a container for use in the food and beverages industry or an item of cutlery. The products may be coloured products. The products may be suitable for re-use.
A method comprising providing a sol comprising a solvent; contacting the sol with a precipitation initiator to initiate precipitation of the sol, wherein the precipitation initiator is different to the solvent; and applying the precipitating sol to a product. The methods of the invention may be used with sols comprising a solvent, a metal alkoxide, and optionally a biopolymer and/or a catalyst, with alkoxides comprising metals, organically modified alkoxides comprising metals, alkoxides comprising metalloids, and organically modified alkoxides comprising metalloids all being encompassed by the term ‘metal alkoxide’. Also disclosed is an apparatus for use in the method comprising a first storage vessel; a second storage vessel; one or more pumps; and one or more delivery means.
