Abstract

A battery mechanical safety system for a hydro-foiling watercraft is disclosed. The watercraft's high-voltage battery is mounted from above (attached to the underside of the deck) and suspended below the hull floor, creating a protected gap between the battery and the hull bottom. This centrally positioned battery compartment optimizes the center of mass for efficient foiling and is isolated from passenger areas for safety. A retractable hydrofoil assembly is coupled to the hull with a mechanical breakaway feature so that upon collision the foil swings upward and away, avoiding contact with the battery. Energy-absorbing structures, such as foam-filled crumple zones and sacrificial structural members, further dissipate impact forces, preserving hull integrity and buoyancy. The system thus enhances both performance and crashworthiness of the hydrofoil electric watercraft.

Abstract

A system of a sonar sensor or an array of sensors integrated directly into the struts and/or foils of a hydrofoil boat. The sensors can be mounted on the leading edge of the strut, the leading edge of the foil, or the tips of the foils and struts. This placement provides a stable platform for beam-forming sonar that can operate in multiple directions (horizontal, vertical, forward, side, down) without adding extra drag. The sonar arrays consist of one transmitter and a linear array of receiver units. The reception direction can be electronically swept, allowing for the differentiation of the strength of received acoustic energy from a transmitted waveform, thus enabling the determination of the direction of an object and creating a 2D sonar image. This beam-forming technique, applied in this specific geometry for high-speed hydrofoiling and allows for long-range detection of passable areas without slowing or stopping the boat.

Abstract

A safety breakaway system for a hydrofoiling watercraft is disclosed. One or more hydrofoil assemblies are attached to the hull via shearable connectors and hinged mounts. During normal operation the hydrofoils are held rigid, but if a collision with an obstacle occurs above a threshold force, the connector fails in a controlled manner, allowing the hydrofoil strut to pivot or detach relative to the hull. The motion is guided (e.g., by a hinge or linkage) so that the foil swings upward instead of imparting full force to the hull. An integrated damping mechanism—such as a hydraulic actuator with a relief valve or a foam-filled recess in the hull—absorbs the impact energy as the foil retracts. This staged response protects the boat's structure by decoupling the foil and dissipating collision energy. The system is resettable by re-securing or replacing the connector, allowing the watercraft to quickly resume operation after an impact.

A steering system for a watercraft having twin propulsion units whose thrust axes are fixed to diverge outward from a longitudinal centerline in plan view. During a turn, a controller differentially commands thrust such that the outboard propulsion unit produces greater thrust than the inboard unit. The outward alignment of the thrust axes yields a net lateral force whose vertical offset from the craft's center of gravity produces a rolling moment that banks the hull inward toward the turn. The system enables banked turns without swiveling drives or rudders and supports zero-radius maneuvers at low speeds. Abstract

A system and method of skim foiling electric-powered boat apparatus. This electric recreational boat or watercraft will utilize "skim foiling," a simplified hydrofoil approach designed to make the benefits of hydrofoil technology.
