Smoking articles having reduced ignition proclivity characteristics are disclosed. The smoking articles include a paper wrapper containing cellulosic fibers and filler particles. The paper wrappers are formed so that the filler particles form a concentration gradient throughout the thickness of the wrapper. More particularly, a greater concentration of filler particles are present at a first surface in comparison to the amount of filler particles present at the opposite surface. In accordance with the present disclosure, an ignition reducing composition is applied to the first surface. In this manner, treated areas having more uniform properties are formed.

Wrappers for smoking articles having reduced diffusion leading to reduced ignition proclivity characteristics
Smoking articles having reduced ignition proclivity characteristics are disclosed. The smoking articles include a wrapper comprising cellulosic fibers and a filler. In accordance with the present disclosure, the filler has a particle size of at least about 3.2 microns and is present in the wrapper in an amount less than about 20% by weight. Further, the wrapper may have a basis weight of less than about 23 gsm and a permeability of from about 15 Coresta to about 110 Coresta. It has been discovered that such wrappers are capable of reducing the ignition proclivity characteristics of a smoking article. If desired, the particular wrapper as described above can also contain discrete areas treated with an ignition reducing composition which further serves to reduce the ignition proclivity characteristics of the article.
A system and method for placing an overwrap material on a bobbin of material is disclosed. The bobbin of material may be, for instance, a bobbin of paper, such as cigarette paper. The system automatically attaches the overwrap material to a leading edge of the bobbin, wraps the bobbin in the overwrap material, cuts the overwrap material, and secures the overwrap material to the bobbin. The overwrap material is used to protect the bobbin during shipping and storage. The overwrap material can also be used to assist in feeding of the bobbin of material into a process.
Smoking articles having reduced ignition proclivity characteristics are disclosed. Smoking articles include a paper wrapper that is treated with a film-forming composition. The film-forming composition forms treated discrete areas on the wrapper. The treated discrete areas reduce ignition proclivity properties of the smoking article made with the wrapper. The film-forming composition contained a film-forming material blended with a burn promoting agent in the absence of a burn retardant. In one embodiment, for instance, the film-forming composition consists essentially of a film-forming material and a burn promoting agent. Various advantages and benefits are realized by blending a film-forming material with burn promoting agent without also incorporating a burn retardant into the composition.
Smoking articles having reduced Hoffmann analytes contained in the mainstream smoke is disclosed. In one embodiment, an alginate composition is applied to a wrapper that is incorporated into a smoking article. The alginate composition causes a significant reduction in at least certain of the Hoffmann analytes that are generated when the smoking article is smoked. The alginate composition may be applied so as to cover a substantial portion of the surface area of the wrapper in one embodiment. In another embodiment, the alginate composition is applied as a single band to the paper wrapper so to cover a substantial portion of the distal end of the smoking article.
