A magnesium alloy is suitable for use as a corrodible downhole article, wherein the alloy includes: (a) 11-15 wt % Y, (b) 0.5-5 wt % in total of rare earth metals other than Y, (c) 0-1 wt % Zr, (d) 0.1-5 wt % Ni, and (e) at least 70 wt % Mg. Abstract

This invention relates to azirconium hydroxideor zirconium oxide comprising, on an oxide basis, up to 30wt% of a dopant comprising one or more of silicon, sulphate, phosphate, tungsten, niobium, aluminium, molybdenum, titanium or tin, and having acid sites, wherein the majority of the acid sites are Lewis acid sites. In addition, the invention relates to a catalyst, catalyst support or precursor, binder, functional binder, coating or sorbent comprising the zirconium hydroxide or zirconium oxide. The invention also relates to a process for preparing zirconium hydroxide, the process comprising the steps of:(a) dissolving a zirconium salt in an aqueous acid, (b) addingone or more complexing agents to the resulting solution or sol, the one or more complexing agents being an organic compound comprising at least one of the following functional groups: an amine, an organosulphate, a sulphonate, a hydroxyl, an ether or a carboxylic acid group,(c)heating the solution or sol formed in step (b), (d) adding a sulphating agent, and(e) adding a base to form a zirconium hydroxide, and(f) optionally adding a dopant.

Abstract

A composition based on cerium, zirconium and tungsten is described. The composition has a content expressed as an oxide, of which cerium is from 5% to 30% of the composition, tungsten is from 2% to 17% of the composition, and the remainder of the composition is zirconium. After aging at 750° C. under an air atmosphere including 10% water, it has a two-phase crystallographic structure having a tetragonal zirconia phase and a monoclinic zirconia phase, with no presence of a crystalline phase including tungsten. The composition can be used as a catalyst, especially in an SCR process.

This invention relates to the utilization of regenerable water tolerant solid materials for the abatements of CO2 emissions from internal combustion engine exhaust streams through repetitive sorption/desorption cycles. The system, which is designed to be used in a gasoline, lean gasoline,diesel passenger car, diesel truck, stationary engine with 50Hz or 60Hz electrical frequency, or a SOFC, will contain a solid sorbent which contains zirconium and will be able to reduce on board the average carbon emissions by up to 10wt%. The preferred materials have been selected from the class of hydrotalcite type compounds and/or earth and alkaline earth zirconates.

Abstract

The invention relates to a composition containing zirconium, titanium and tungsten oxides, and optionally the oxide of an element M selected from silicon, aluminium, iron, molybdenum, manganese, zinc, tin, and rare earths in the following mass proportions of said different elements: titanium oxide: 20%-50%; tungsten oxide: 1%-20%, M-element oxide: 1%-20%; the balance consisting of zirconium oxide. The composition is obtained by: placing in a liquid medium a zirconium compound, a titanium compound, optionally an M-element compound and a basic compound; adding a tungsten compound to the precipitate suspension thus obtained and having a pH value of between 1 and 7; maturing the suspension resulting from the preceding step; and optionally separating the precipitate and calcining it.

Abstract

This invention relates to gadolinium-containing magnesium alloys, particularly those which possess high strength combined with corrosion resistance, and an optimised balance of strength and ductility. The described alloys consist of 2.0 to 5.0, preferably 2.3 to 4.6, at% in total of gadolinium and at least one of soluble heavy lanthanides and yttrium, wherein the ratio of the aggregate amount of soluble heavy lanthanides and yttrium to the amount of gadolinium is between 1.25:1 and 1.75:1, and preferably approximately 1.5:1, from 0 up to 0.3 at% of zirconium, preferably at least 0.03 at%, optionally with zinc, wherein when zinc is present the amount of zinc is such that the ratio of the weight of zinc to the weight of zirconium is preferably less than 2:1, and more preferably less than 0.75:1, all other lanthanides, viz. lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium and ytterbium in an aggregate amount of less than at 0.2 at%, and preferably less than 0.1 at%, the balance being magnesium, with any other element being present in an amount of no more than 0.2 at%, and preferably no more than 0.1 at%, and more preferably being present only as an incidental impurity.

Abstract

This invention relates to an improved amorphous zirconium hydroxide and a method for its production. The hydroxide has a surface area of at least 300m2/g, a total pore volume of at least 0.70cm3/g and an average pore size of between 5nm and 15nm, and is prepared by a process which comprises the steps of : a) preparing an aqueous solution comprising sulphate anions and a zirconium salt such that the ZrO2: SO3 ratio is 1:0.40 to 1:0.52, (b) chilling the solution to below 25°C, (c) adding an alkali in order to precipitate the amorphous zirconium hydroxide, (d) filtering and washing the precipitated zirconium hydroxide with water or an alkali to remove residual sulphate and chloride, (e) hydrothermally treating the zirconium hydroxide at a pressure of less than 3 barg, and (f) drying the zirconium hydroxide. The zirconium hydroxide of the present invention, which can be doped, is particularly useful in catalytic applications.
