Abstract

[Problem] To provide a hardness testing device and a hardness testing method with which it is possible to measure hardness with good precision even if a surface layer is not removed. [Solution] An initial test power which is arbitrarily changed from a reference value is applied by an indenter (11) to a sample material surface. Next, a main test power is applied in which an additional test power is added to the initial test power. The initial test power is restored. A test hardness of the sample material is derived, on the basis of a Rockwell hardness computation formula, from the difference between the indenter forward depth in the two initial test powers. A variance in the hardness arising from changing the initial test power from the reference value is corrected in the derived test hardness.
