Cooling means produces cold air to refrigerate items in the product display space. A cold air curtain is provided across the access opening using a forwardly-positioned discharge outlet communicating with a supply duct and a forwardly-positioned return inlet in communication with a return duct receiving air from the air curtain. The shelf has a supply duct at a lower level communicating with a downwardly-facing forward discharge outlet and a return duct at an upper level communicating with an upwardly-facing forward return inlet. In front-to-back section through the shelf, a forward supply duct extension in front of the supply duct narrows forwardly above the discharge outlet and a forward return duct extension in front of the return duct reaches downwardly to the lower level of the shelf to lie forwardly of the supply duct. This beneficially reduces the thickness of the front of the shelf.

A refrigerated integrated multi-cellular display appliance (1) is formed from an array of airflow-managed cells (5) which share a common insulated cabinet. The top and bottom walls of adjacent cells (5) define shelves (9) which subdivide the cabinet (7) into product display spaces (17), each having a respective airflow-managed cell (5). An access opening (19) is sealed by a vertical air curtain (21) flowing downwardly in front of the product display space (17). The air curtain (21) extends between a discharge air grille (23) and a return air grille (25). Air received from the air curtain (21) includes entrained ambient air containing heat and moisture which are removed during recirculation. Air is cooled and circulated by means of cooling coils 39, drainage systems (41) and fan arrays (43) within the ducts (27, 29, 31). The airflow-managed cells (5) of the invention can also be fitted to conventional insulated cabinets or retrofitted to existing retail display cabinets.
