A nuclear power system includes a borehole nuclear reactor, including: a reactor core comprising nuclear fuel and positioned a borehole that is formed from a terranean surface to a subterranean formation; a neck that extends upward from the reactor; a heat exchanger positioned at the top of the neck and in thermal communication with the reactor core; and a pressurizer positioned in the borehole downhole of the reactor core or including a tube or pipe that rises near to the terranean surface. The pressurizer is configured to maintain a reactor pressure at a pressure of water at an operating depth in the subterranean formation. The reactor core, the neck, the heat exchanger, and the pressurizer can be connected to form a preassembled kit prior to installation in the borehole, or are configured to be assembled as parts are lowered into the borehole.

A nuclear reactor system includes a drillhole that extends from a terranean surface through one or more subterranean formations; a reactor core positioned in the drillhole, the reactor core comprising at least one nuclear fuel element; a primary coolant system configured to transport a primary fluid coolant between the reactor core and a heat exchanger; and a secondary coolant system thermally coupled to the primary coolant system with the heat exchanger and configured to transport a secondary fluid coolant between the heat exchanger and the terranean surface.

A method of operating a nuclear reactor system includes: operating a first nuclear reactor to produce steam, the first nuclear reactor positioned in a borehole that extends from a terranean surface through one or more subterranean formations; shutting down the first nuclear reactor; placing a second nuclear reactor into the borehole; and operating the second nuclear reactor to produce steam. A method for controlling a nuclear reactor system includes boron injection and removal, and adjusting a pressure in at least one pressurizer vessel of a pair of pressurizer vessels. A first pressurizer vessel is in fluid communication with primary coolant at a first depth of a reactor vessel. A second pressurizer vessel is in fluid communication with the primary coolant at a second depth of the reactor vessel. The reactor vessel is positioned in a borehole that extends from a terranean surface through one or more subterranean formations.

Heat exchanger in a borehole receives heat through a rock formation from another borehole which includes a nuclear reactor
A nuclear reactor system includes a first drillhole extending from a terranean surface through one or more subterranean formations. A reactor core is positioned in the first drillhole, and includes at least one nuclear fuel element. A primary coolant system is configured to transport a primary fluid coolant through the reactor core. A second drillhole extends from the terranean surface through the one or more subterranean formations and is separated from the first drillhole by a portion of a rock formation. A heat exchanger is positioned in the second drillhole in thermal communication with the reactor core through the portion of the rock formation. A secondary coolant system is thermally coupled to the heat exchanger and configured to transport a secondary fluid coolant between the heat exchanger and the terranean surface.
