Abstract
An apparatus for maintaining a railcar coupler key securing a railcar coupler shank to a yoke of a railcar. The railcar coupler key retainer apparatus includes an elongated key stop adapted to be secured against an interior surface of a sill side wall. A retainer is mounted to the exterior surface of the sill side wall and defines a through bore which aligns with a through bore in a flange portion of the key stop when the key stop abuts with a closed end of an elongated slot defined by the side wall of the sill. A locking member is received in the through bores in the key stop and retainer to secure the key stop to the interior surface of the sill side wall and thereby maintaining the railcar key retainer apparatus to maintain the railcar coupler key between the side walls of the sill and to secure the yoke to the coupler shank.

Abstract
An apparatus for maintaining a railcar coupler key in position to releasably secure a railcar coupler shank to a yoke accommodated in a sill of a railcar. The railcar coupler key retainer apparatus includes an elongated key stop adapted to be releasably secured against an interior surface of a sill side wall defining an elongated slot. The key stop is configured with a flange portion which projects beyond an exterior surface of the sill side wall defining the slot. The flange portion defines a through bore having a closed margin. A retainer is mounted to the exterior surface of the sill side wall defining the elongated slot and defines a through bore which aligns with the through bore in the flange portion of the key stop when the key stop abuts with a closed end of the elongated slot defined by the side wall of the sill. A locking member is received in the through bores in the key stop and retainer to releasably secure the key stop to the interior surface of the sill side wall and thereby maintaining the railcar key retainer apparatus in position to maintain the railcar coupler key between the side walls of the sill and in position to secure the yoke to the coupler shank.

Abstract

Abstract

An axially elongated yoke encompasses the first and second cushioning assemblies, terminates in an open forward end, and is coupled to the shank portion of the coupler. The first and second cushioning assemblies act in series relative to each other to absorb and cushion impact forces directed against them when the energy absorption system operates in a buff direction. Advantageously, the second follower acts in concert with the center stops and the second cushioning assembly to minimize excessive system cycles while better dissipating train action energy when the energy absorption system operates in a draft direction.

Abstract

A selectively operated secondary lock is rotatable about a fixed axis disposed above the fixed axis of the operating shaft assembly. The secondary lock rotates between a first condition, wherein a stop engages with at least one link of the linkage assembly, and a second condition, wherein each door is permitted to move to the open position. A release mechanism is provided for releasing the primary lock by moving at least one of the links of the linkage system relative to the other thereby allowing the door to be forcibly moved toward their open position under the influence of the columnar load being placed thereon by the lading in the hopper.

Abstract
A railcar energy absorption/coupling system including a cushioning assembly arranged in operable combination with a coupler and a yoke. The cushioning assembly is positioned in a draft pocket defined by a draft sill on a railcar between the front and rear stops. The yoke consists of a back wall along with top and bottom walls which are joined to and axially extending from the back wall toward a forward end of the cushioning assembly. The back wall of the yoke is disposed to contact the rear end of the cushioning assembly. The top and bottom walls of the yoke are operably coupled to a shank portion of the coupler toward a forward end of the yoke. The top and bottom walls of the yoke each include stop members which extend in opposed lateral directions from each other and limit draft travel while maximizing buff travel and limit total combined travel of the energy absorption/coupling system. The energy absorption/coupling system has a neutral position, a full buff position disposed a first predetermined distance from the neutral position, and a full draft position disposed a second predetermined distance from the neutral position, with the full buff and full draft positions for the energy absorption coupling system being disposed in opposite directions from the neutral position.

A boot adapter is releasably suspended below the discharge opening for influencing the discharge of material from the second portion of the gate assembly. A method for influencing gravitational discharge of material from a railroad hopper car is also disclosed.

Either the members of the mulitpiece cap or separate structure on the cap members or housing facilitate vertical reciprocatory movements of the cap members relative to the housing. A spring resiliently urges the cap members toward railcar body structure. The cap members define cooperating angled surfaces therebetween for urging wall structure on the first and second members in opposite horizontal directions and toward frictional engagement with the wall structure on the housing in response to a vertical load acting on a friction contacting surface on the cap. The friction contacting surface on the second member establishes a proper coefficient of friction with the railcar body structure. An apparatus, carried by the cap members, allows the cap members to horizontally slide relative to each other while limiting vertical separation of the cap members relative to each other during operation of the constant contact side bearing assembly.

A low profile discharge gate assembly including a rigid frame defining a generally rectangular discharge opening and a gate slidably mounted on the frame for controlling discharge of commodity from the gate assembly. Structure carried by and extending inwardly from the frame is arranged between a lower surface on the gate and boot flanges defined by the gate assembly frame for restricting the flow of commodity from the gate assembly. A vertical distance of less than 7.5 inches separates the boot flanges from mounting flanges on the gate assembly frame whereby permitting a conventional unloading sled to fit under the gate assembly to discharge commodity therefrom. An operating shaft assembly selectively controls movement of the gate between open and closed positions. A lock assembly is also provided for inhibiting inadvertent movement of the gate from the closed position toward the open position.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract
A system on a railroad hopper car for providing an indication, observable by a person located either proximate to or remote from the hopper car, of a condition of a lock arranged in operable combination with a mechanism on the hopper car for controlling discharge of material from the hopper car. A cold formed railcar spring including a spring pad formed from a perform of thermoplastic polyester elastomer having a durometer hardness ranging between about 40 and about 45 on the Shore D scale and sandwiched between a pair of metal plates. Each metal plate has a generally centralized bore extending therethrough and includes a plurality of radially spaced mechanical fasteners formed as an integral part of each plate. An apparatus for controlling discharge of commodity from a railcar having a hopper with at least two transversely spaced discharge openings and two laterally spaced and commonly joined pivotal doors arranged in registry with the two discharge openings. The lock assembly can be operated in response to powered or manual movement of the doors. An indicator is also provided for providing a visual indication, from a side of the car, the operable condition of the lock assembly.

Abstract
An apparatus for controlling discharge of commodity from a railcar having a hopper with at least two transversely spaced discharge openings and two laterally spaced and commonly joined pivotal doors arranged in registry with the two discharge openings. The control apparatus includes a transversely extending operating shaft and a linkage system operably connecting the operating shaft to the doors. A drive mechanism is operably connectable to the linkage system. The drive mechanism includes a driver for selectively operating the linkage mechanism to either simultaneously push the doors into their closed position or to simultaneously pull the doors from their closed position. The drive mechanism further includes a lever radially extending from the operating shaft and operably connected to the driver. To releasably hold and maintain the doors in their closed position, a lock assembly is arranged in operable combination with the driver. The lock assembly can be operated in either of two operable conditions and either in timed relation to movement of the doors or manually. An indicator is also provided for providing a visual indication, from a side of the car, the operable condition of the lock assembly.

Abstract
An elastomeric spring including an elongated elastomeric body defining a longitudinal axis for the spring and having first and second longitudinal ends. An outer surface of the elastomeric body extends between the first and second ends and has four generally planar sides, with each planar side of the outer surface being disposed to one side of and generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the spring so as to reduce radial bulging of the spring in all directions when an axial load is applied to the spring. The outer surface of the elastomeric body further includes four angled corner sections extending between the first and second ends of the elastomeric body and disposed a substantially common distance from the longitudinal axis of the spring. One corner section is disposed between any two adjoining sides on the outer surface of the elastomeric body.

Abstract
A constant contact side bearing assembly configured for insertion into a walled receptacle provided on an upper surface of a railcar bolster. The constant contact side bearing assembly includes a walled housing defining a cavity extending therethrough and open at opposite ends and a spring having a first end, abuttingly engaging a portion of the upper surface of said railcar bolster, and a second end, axially spaced from the first end. A cap is arranged at the second end of the spring. The cap is mounted for reciprocatory guided movements by and relative to the housing, with a generally flat railcar body engaging portion on the cap being positioned relative to the housing and the walled enclosure by the spring. The side bearing assembly further includes an apparatus for locating and securing the side bearing assembly within the walled receptacle on the railcar bolster.
