Abstract

A method for the detection of explosives using a single sample. The explosives include nitro aliphatic and nitro aromatic-based explosives. The method includes steps which require different pHs to discriminate between these types of explosives and at least in the detection step of the nitro aliphatic explosive requires the presence of a nitro aromatic compound. A kit for detecting explosives which includes a medium for collecting a sample, a base optionally impregnated on the medium; and a nitro aromatic solution for detecting a nitro aliphatic explosive by contacting the solution with the sample on the medium. A reagent including a nitro aromatic compound, having one or more additional electron withdrawing groups, in the presence of a basic compound usable for detecting nitro aliphatic explosives.

Abstract

Field test kits for detecting explosive substances including a combination of reagents for sequentially testing for perchlorates, nitro aromatic compounds, nitroamines, nitroesters, chlorates, bromates, peroxides and nitrates are discussed. The reagents in the kits may contain methylene blue, methylene blue in a basic solution, and an acidified aromatic amine solution. Methods for employing the test kits are discussed, the methods being suitably adapted to detect the moieties suspected of being present. The kits may include a reagent for detecting explosive perchlorates, the reagent being methylene blue. The kits also include a reagent for detecting explosive nitroamines and nitroesters, the reagent being an acidified aromatic amine solution. The aromatic amine solution also can detect nitro aromatic explosives after a strong basic hydroxide has first been applied to the suspected substance.

Abstract

A reagent for detecting and identifying a chemical substance. The reagent is an emulsion including a cobalt salt dissolved in water which also includes at least one organic solvent that is at least partly water-miscible and also including an organic compound which serves as an ion pair color changing indicator or a pH sensitive color changing indicator, the organic compound dissolved in an organic solvent only partly miscible with water. A two product kit for detecting and identifying a chemical substance is also taught. The kit includes the aforementioned reagent and a diazonium salt, typically a diazonium salt having electron withdrawing groups on its phenyl rings. A method for detecting and identifying a chemical substance using the two product kit is also discussed. The reagent, testing kit and method may be used for detecting and identifying controlled substances.
