A blended furnish with improved performance characteristics while reducing environmental impact, when applied to a substrate and methods of making and using blended furnish are provided. A composite product using a blended furnish is also provided.

Abstract

A paper based overlay is provided. The overlay has a paper impregnated with a resin composition having an acrylic resin having a glass transition temperature in a range of from about −20° C. to about 40° C. and a resin content from about 15 to about 35 wt. % based on the weight of the overlay and an adhesive is applied at the back of a substrate. The acrylic composition may include wax in the amount of about 0.005 to about 3.5 wt. % based on the weight of the resin composition. A method of producing the overlay is also provided. The overlay is highly water and abrasion resistant with low volatile content.

Abstract

A fire retardant overlay is described for use in providing fire resistance to a substrate, and methods for preparing the same. The overlay contains an intumescent coating layer comprising an expandable graphite and a polymeric binder and a fiberglass layer comprising a polymeric binder, wherein the polymeric binder of the intumescent coating layer may be the same or different from the polymeric binder of the fiberglass layer. The overlay has the following feature(s) (A) and/or (B): (A) wherein the expandable graphite has an activation temperature which is higher than the crossover temperature of the polymeric binder in the intumescent coating layer; and/or (B) said fiberglass layer has a bottom half and a top half, and the bottom half has a higher concentration of polymeric binder than the top half, in addition to the intumescent coating layer being in contact with the top half of the fiberglass layer.

A method for the production of a decorative laminate having an abrasion resistant, scuff, and mar resistant overlay, wherein the method comprises forming an overlay, wherein the method of forming the overlay comprises: impregnating a first side of a substrate with a first thermosetting resin; coating the first side of the substrate with a layer of slurry comprising a second thermosetting resin and a mix of abrasion resistant particles, wherein the mix of abrasion resistant particles comprises at least about 5 percent of elliptical, platelet shaped abrasion resistant particles to form a composite; and curing the composite to form a cured composite.
