The cushioning device may be installed within a sill of a railcar to cushion buff or draft forces from a coupler.
A yoke for a railway car is provided with a coupler support protruding from a top wall of the yoke into an interior space in the yoke to contact the coupler shank when the coupler head is deflected downward to prevent the coupler from drooping after prolonged use.

A selective cushioning apparatus for a railway car absorbs draft and buff loads applied to a coupler of a railway car during train assembly and normal operation. The apparatus according to the invention provides better cushioning than a conventional draft gear without the excessive travel and maintenance issues of a hydraulic cushioning unit. In embodiments, the selective cushioning unit is adapted to fit into an AAR standard pocket for a hydraulic cushioning unit.
A truck mounted braking system is provided with a mechanical pivot adjustment on a lever connected to the brake actuator to permit the braking force applied to the wheels to vary depending on the lading condition of the car, without involving additional pneumatic elements such as a pneumatic empty load device. The system adjusts the braking force applied when the hand brake is activated, even when the railway car is disconnected from the pneumatic brake line.
A system and method for manufacturing and/or reconditioning side frames and bolsters for railway cars includes at least one robot adapted to access positions along the length of the part. A map of the part dimensions, which may be obtained by a probe or scanner on the robot(s), allows a processor to determine where welding and machining are required to meet certain dimensional tolerances, leveraging novel reference surfaces on the part which cannot be leveraged using conventional gauges. The robot(s) may locate and mount welding and material removal tools to carry out the welding and material removal operations determined by the processor.

A pipe clamp wedge is disclosed that can be used with an existing pipe clamp anchor to secure a brake line pipe to a rail car. The wedge has a cradle portion having a concave side receiving the pipe, and a convex wedge side opposite the concave side. The cradle portion has a height increasing in a longitudinal direction, and a pair of opposed channels on lateral sides of the wedge are adapted to receive tabs on the pipe anchor. A pair of tabs on the wedge extends in the opposite direction from the tabs on the pipe anchor on either side of the cradle portion. Thus, the wedge can be slid onto the anchor, tightening around the pipe as the wedge moves in the longitudinal direction onto the anchor, and the wedge is dimensioned so that when the wedge cannot move further, the tabs on the wedge extend beyond the pipe anchor and may be bent up (toward the railcar) to secure the wedge. The parts of the combination are adapted so that sliding the pipe onto the anchor and bending the tabs may be done with a hammer.

A coupler head and mounting bracket combination for supporting a brake hose fitting uses a lug formed integrally with the coupler head and a support bracket mating with the lug. In embodiments, the bracket may be installed in a plurality of vertical positions on the coupler head. The bracket is maintained in a position inboard of the lateral side of the coupler head, to reduce or eliminate the likelihood that the bracket will interfere with the other equipment or the car body. Embodiments of the invention are particularly adapted for “E” type and “F” type coupler heads.

A system for preventing manway cover gasket over-compression utilizes machined surfaces on the top of eye bolt lugs on the side of a manway nozzle, machined compression stops on the periphery of the cover, and a specified distance between the top of the eye bolt lug and the manway nozzle edge to engage the stops at a predetermined amount of gasket compression. Force is distributed over an increased contact surface area between the manway cover and the bolt lugs to ensure that deformation occurs preferentially in the eye bolts before any other component in the manway cover system.

A knuckle for a railway coupler system is made without internal voids or cores. Instead, external pockets are formed on the front face and tail portion surface to reduce weight. The knuckle is formed by investment casting, which permits a pulling face to be provided without a draft angle or parting line typical of a cast part. As a result of these innovations, the knuckle according to the invention has an improved fatigue life.
A key retainer for retaining a draft key in the key slot of a railway car yoke is mounted on the outside of the sill of a railway car. Mounting the key retainer with a retainer key system on the outside of the sill, and aligned with the sill cutout, permits ease of visual inspection of the retainer from outside the railway car, and allows for repair of the key retainer without disassembling the coupler from the yoke, or the yoke from the railway car.
