Abstract

A brake pad assembly for a bicycle includes a spreader spring, and a pair of friction pads. The spreader spring has a first leaf, a second leaf, and a spring joint joining the first leaf and the second leaf together. The spreader spring is biased towards a spread position in which the first leaf and second leaf are spaced apart from each other, and is moveable to a compressed position in which the first leaf and the second leaf are moved towards each other relative to the spread position. Each leaf has a rotor facing surface, and each leaf has a set of grooves gouged into the rotor facing surface to yield a corresponding set of barbs extending from the rotor facing surface. The friction pads are secured to the rotor facing surfaces via the barbs, which are embedded in friction pads.

Second material may be a brake friction composition. Barbs may be pointed or headed or in combination. Second material may be in the form of castings, sheets or pads. Second material may be impaled by at least some of the barbs. Lamination of first and second materials preferably includes an adhesive therebetween. The adhesive may include uncured rubber to be vulcanized in place.

Abstract

An apparatus is provided for texturing the surface of a brake plate has three die plates and spring supports therebetween. A toothed tooling mounts to the top die plate above an anvil on the center die plate both of which ride on posts held by the lower die plate. The toothed tooling comprises multiple blades each with multiple replaceable toothed inserts are held in a cartridge arrangement. The anvil receives brake plates from a separately supported plate feed mechanism with greatly reduced reciprocating mass. The complete die set can be set up on the bench and inserted ready to use in any style of press where the press ram contacts the upper die plate.

Abstract

A texturizing tool that creates concentric, circular patterns of burrs in the surface of a workpiece by graving, planning or plowing, curved stop-grooves each with a burr of the displaced material which remains securely attached to the workpiece. Toothed cylindrical saws having angled slots for a drive pin are concentrically assembled. When forced against the workpiece, each saw rotates some few degrees causing the teeth to cut the stop-grooves and making the burrs. The drive pin and a return spring are carried in a capped outer cylindrical actuator which the drive pin also passes through. The concentric saw's cutting teeth cut in opposite directions to cancel out the cutting forces on the workpiece. Articles so texturized may be used in structural adhesive bonding, and for embedment of texturized articles such as fasteners, washers, plates and the like, into molded plastic and composite structures while being molded.

Abstract

A shim for a disc brake pad is provided. The shim is formed of a generally planar metal sheet that has a plurality of curved or bent edge tabs extending out from its edges thereof to engage the brake pad. A centrally disposed raised area is provided on the shim. The raised area serves as a compartment for lubricant when the shim is retained on the brake pad. The raised area has at least one lubricant access port to allow lubricant to be introduced into the compartment without removing the shim from the brake pad. A disc brake pad assembly having the shim is also provided. A method of lubricating the assembly via the access port is also provided.

Abstract

The present invention is a shim or shim assembly that clips onto a brake caliper piston. It is generally a rimmed round (disc or annular) shape to cap the edges of the caliper piston and includes surface features for lubrication, and improved fitting. Reduced noise from frictional fretting is provided along with protection of piston's outer rim. Reduced thermal transfer into the piston is also provided.

Abstract

A subassembly for use in a brake assembly, the subassembly comprising a shim, a backing plate and a friction pad formed of a friction pad material, wherein the friction pad material extends into at least one pass-through hole in the backing plate; and wherein one or more flanges perimetering at least one opening in the shim are encased in the friction material; whereby the shim is resisted from movement at least in part by the one or more flanges being encased in the friction pad material. A preferred methodology of forming the braking subassembly comprises the steps of forming the friction pad on the backing plate and at least partially filling the at least one pass-through hole with said friction pad material such that the one or more flanges perimetering the at least one opening in the shim is encased in the friction pad material.

Abstract

A tool for burring the surface of a material. The tool has two sets of oppositely facing toothed blades which are made to move towards each other when the tool is pressed against a surface. Each tooth planes a shallow groove into the surface which results in hook-like burrs or planings rising from each groove. Limiters on the blade stroke ensure that the raised burr is not severed. A spring returns the blades to their start position. The resulting surface therefore has a plurality of shallow, non-piercing stopped grooves with a like plurality of hook-like burrs. Such a modified surface provides increased surface area for electrochemical activity, and a mechanical grip to materials bonded thereto. The tool uses replaceable blade packs which snap into a permanent tool housing. The tool may be operated with a simple hammer blow or it may be rapidly driven into large or small areas of a surface by a manual and/or computer directed punch press.

Abstract

An improvement to a surface burring tool comprising the use of drive pins each with flat surfaces, the first flat surface to bear on the flat surfaces of the angled ramps of the tool body so as to reduce pressure and to thereby reduce wear, and the second flat surface to locate against an edge of the slot in the retaining clip of the blade assembly to prevent rotation of the pin. This will ensure that the first flat will be parallel to its ramp on insertion of the replaceable blade assembly into the tool body. Pin rotation might result in the first flat not remaining parallel the tool ramp on which the pin slides during tool operation.

Abstract

An apparatus is provided for texturing the surface of a brake plate has three die plates and spring supports therebetween. A toothed tooling mounts to the top die plate above an anvil on the centre die plate both of which ride on posts held by the lower die plate.

Abstract

A texturizing tool that creates concentric, circular patterns of burrs in the surface of a workpiece by graving, planing or plowing, curved stop-grooves each with a burr of the displaced material which remain securely attached to the workpiece. Toothed cylindrical saws having angled slots for a drive pin are concentrically assembled. When forced against the workpiece each saw rotates some few degrees causing the teeth to cut the stop-grooves and making the burrs. The drive pin and a return spring are carried in a capped outer cylindrical actuator which the drive pin also passes through. The concentric saw's cutting teeth cut in opposite directions to cancel out the cutting forces on the workpiece. Articles so texturized may be used in structural adhesive bonding, and for embedment of texturized articles such as fasteners, washers plates and the like, into molded plastic and composite structures while being molded.
