Abstract

A two-dimensional spectrometer includes a first mirror, a prism, a diffraction grating, a lens, a second mirror, and a two-dimensional sensor. The first mirror is configured to receive the optical signal from the optical entrance and reflect the optical signal towards the prism. After passing through the prism, the optical signal is provided to the diffraction grating. The diffraction grating diffracts the optical signal so as to generate a diffracted optical signal which is directed back through to prism, wherein the lens configured focuses the diffracted optical signal onto the second mirror. The second mirror reflects the diffracted optical signal back through the lens which focuses the diffracted optical signal onto the two-dimensional sensor. The diffraction grating may be an echelle grating.

Abstract

A device for analyzing the material composition of a sample via plasma spectrum analysis includes a laser assembly configured to emit a beam for plasma spectrum analysis and an optical assembly configured to direct the beam towards a target for plasma spectrum analysis of the target. The optical assembly is configured to collect a plasma emitted light emitted from a plasma and provide the plasma emitted light to a dispersion module. The dispersion module includes a first and second diffraction gratings. The first diffraction grating and second diffraction grating are positioned within the dispersion module such that light received from the optical assembly contacts the first diffraction grating at least two times before being directed out of the dispersion module.

Abstract

A food integrity probe design comprising two illumination fiber rings, allowing for two different simultaneous measurements wherein the inner illumination ring generates a surface reflectance signal on the central detection fibers and the outer illumination ring allows for an additional interactance measurement, probing deeper into the sample than the surface reflectance alone while partially eliminating specular reflection, which reduces the signal quality, through the addition of a ring-shaped diffusor onto the inner illumination ring is disclosed.

Abstract

A device for analyzing the material composition of an object via plasma spectrum analysis includes an optical assembly having a first aspheric mirror and a second aspheric mirror. The first and second aspheric mirrors have an aspheric surface profile. The first aspheric mirror is configured to receive a laser beam at non-normal incidence along a first axis. The optical assembly is configured such that the first aspheric mirror directs the beam to the object for plasma spectrum analysis along a second axis, the second axis being different from the first axis. The plasma emitted light emitted is collected coaxially along the second axis and redirected along the first axis in the opposite direction by the first aspheric mirror. The second aspheric mirror is configured to redirect a portion of the plasma emitted light along a third axis to a spectrometer for analysis.

Abstract

This disclosure describes an apparatus and method of multi-spectral imaging to obtain and analyze information contained in the spectral distribution (reflection, absorption, or emission) of components within the image. The spectral information is captured in a series of images from differing spectral regions. This series of images are then combined into a composite image using re-colorization and image stabilization algorithms for display in real time. The process can be repeated continuously allowing spectral changes over time to be captured and analyzed. In the alternative one sequence of images can be captured for use as a still image.

Abstract

A highly durable, environmentally and thermally stable Silver coating for mirrors, Infrared thin-film filters, or other optical coatings having very high reflection values over a large spectral and angular range where the enhanced durability and thermal stability are achieved through the selection and layer sequence of materials, which provide good chemical and environmental protection to Silver. Of particular importance are the layers directly below the Silver, and directly above the Silver (nucleation layer and barrier layer). It is important that the materials of those two layers provide diffusion barriers for Oxygen, water vapour and other corrosive gases, and are compatible in such a way that the layer below the Silver provides a good nucleation bed for Silver assuring that Silver will grow dense and highly reflective, and in some cases, when deposited in very thin layers, highly transparent in the visible spectrum, and the material of the layer directly above the Silver layer has to be compatible with Silver in a sense that it grows dense on the top of Silver, does not reduce the reflectivity of Silver, and also provides a good nucleation layer for the next layer being deposited.

Abstract

This disclosure describes an Oxygen sensing patch that can be attached to the interior surface of packages for oxygen interrogation inside the package. The Oxygen sensing patch is integrated into the inside of the package during the packaging manufacturing process and, when used with a blue LED and fluorometer, will quantitatively report the amount of oxygen in the package. The Oxygen sensing patch is suitable for measuring oxygen in gas, such as headspace applications, and in liquid. Oxygen is sensed by measuring the phase shift of fluorescence of the fluorophore immobilized in the Oxygen sensing patch. The patch can be non-intrusively interrogated by a light source. The interrogation can be done using a phase fluorometer where oxygen level is desired, or inspected visually for color change using a hand held blue LED.

Abstract

This invention belongs to the field of optical chemical sensors. Specifically, it relates to sensors based on the absorbance and emission of light by an indicator molecule where the optical properties of the indicator molecule change in response to a particular analyte. These indicator molecules are immobilized in a transparent substance that is exposed to light, where the substance is typically a solid such as a sol-gel or a polymer. More specifically, it is a new process for manufacturing a material (a medium or matrix) to hold or encapsulate sensing molecules. This new material has an improved resistance to exposure to hydrocarbons. These materials are used to immobilize colorimetric and/or fluorescence indicators in a matrix that repels hydrocarbons in general and non-polar hydrocarbons (i.e. aromatics hydrocarbons) in particular.

Abstract

A combination patterned reflective dichroic filter and optical coating, and method of making the same, is disclosed by starting with a filter substrate, laying down a pattern of dichroic filter material, but stopping short of completing the layers required for the spectral characteristics of the filter. The spectral characteristics are completed by adding a blanket coating of a material such as an anti-reflective material. In an alternative embodiment the blanket coating can be applied prior to addition of the dichroic filter material.

Abstract

A dual coating and lift-off method for protecting patterned dielectric-metal coatings using a 2-layer lithography process that is exposed and developed to create an undercut and then, after the wafer is coated with a metal/dielectric filter ending with an incomplete final layer, the top lithography layer is lifted off exposing metal layer edges and leaving the bottom lithography layer intact on the wafer such that the final filter layer(s) can be deposited to complete the coating and passivate the exposed metal layer edges is disclosed.
