Abstract

An opto-pyro ignition system (10) and corresponding method comprising a laser firing unit (LFU) for emitting a laser pulse; an opto-mechanical unit (OMU) for optically connecting the laser firing unit (LFU) with a terminal function (FT) comprising a laser initiated explosive component (LIEC); the opto-pyro ignition system (10) characterized in that said opto-mechanical unit (OMU) provides a safe mode of operation and an armed mode of operation wherein : when said opto- mechanical unit (OMU) is in the armed mode of operation, the laser firing unit (LFU) is optically connected to the terminal function (FT) so that when said laser pulse reaches said terminal function (FT), an ignition of the laser initiated explosive component (LIEC) is triggered; and when said opto-mechanical unit (OMU) is in said safe mode of operation, an optical uncoupling of the laser firing unit (LFU) and the terminal function (FT) is provided.
