Abstract

A mirror assembly for vehicle is disclosed. A mirror assembly for vehicle is disclosed. The mirror assembly includes a housing, a retaining rim, and a mirror lens that is secured between the housing and the retaining rim. In one embodiment, the mirror has a visual indicator mounted to the retaining rim or housing. When an object or pedestrian is detected in a lane next to or in front of a vehicle, the visual indicator provides light signals or other type of warning to an operator driving the vehicle. In one embodiment, the mirror assembly has a speaker mounted to the housing. Abstract

A vehicular vision system includes a forward-viewing camera disposed at a windshield of a vehicle and an electronic control unit (ECU) disposed at the vehicle remote from the forward-viewing camera. The forward-viewing camera is connected to the ECU via an image data transmission line, the image data transmission line includes a power-over-coaxial cable. The image data transmission line (i) transmits image data captured by the forward-viewing camera from the forward-viewing camera to the ECU for processing at the ECU and (ii) delivers electrical power from the ECU to said forward-viewing camera for powering the forward-viewing camera. Captured image data transmitted to the ECU from at least the forward-viewing camera is processed at the ECU for at least one driver assistance system of the vehicle. Filtering circuitry filters electrical noise arising at least from electrical power delivered via the image data transmission line from the ECU to the forward-viewing camera.

A video camera system for a school bus to replace one or more of the mirror systems typically utilized on school buses today. One or two cameras can be positioned on the sides of the school bus in place of the rearview mirrors presently utilized. A pair of cameras with wide-angle lenses can be positioned on the front fenders of the school bus to replace the cross view mirrors currently used today. One or more cameras can also be positioned on the rear of the school bus to display the environment immediately behind the school bus. Video monitors displaying the images from the cameras can be positioned in the cab of the school bus for viewing by the driver. The monitors from the cameras positioned on the sides of the school bus can be positioned on the A-pillars of the school bus approximately in the locations presently occupied by the rearview mirrors outside of the school bus. The monitors for the cross-view mirrors can be positioned on the dashboard or instrument panel of the school bus, preferably to the right side of the driver and adjacent the egress door. The monitor for the camera(s) on the rear of the bus can be positioned on the windshield of the vehicle. A portable computer could also be provided in place of the stationary monitors, and a central recording system can be utilized to retain the images from all of the cameras for subsequent monitoring purposes.

Abstract

A vehicle-borne camera-based observation system for monitoring areas adjacent a vehicle or passenger vehicle, such as a bus or schoolbus, is disclosed, to provide safer operation for passersby, including for children, and driver convenience. The system includes several cameras, and several monitors in a driver's area displaying all of the fields of view from the cameras, such that each monitor may be controllable to show either the field of view of a first camera or a the field of view of a second camera, according to a driver selection or according to an automatic selection. Night vision, automatic tracking, and illumination systems are also provided.

Abstract

A lighting strip along the side of a schoolbus or other passenger vehicle between a door near the front of the schoolbus and the back side of the schoolbus to reduce the risk of people or other objects being injured by the schoolbus. The lighting strip may be focused downward to illuminate the ground and may provide vehicle status information and guiding information. Lighting strips may be provided on both sides of the schoolbus, and may also be provided on the back side of the schoolbus and on mirrors or mirror arms. Further, the lighting strips may be provided on the underside of the schoolbus along the passenger side. One or more floodlights may be provided on the roof or near the top of the schoolbus along the side with the door. An expandable crossing gate on the driver's side of the exterior wall is also provided.

Abstract

An asymmetrical mirror lens, usable on front fenders of school buses and similar vehicles, which has a plurality of mirror sections, each having a distinct constant radius of curvature to reduce image distortion. Optional sections located between sections of the constant radius of curvature have a step-wise changing radii of curvature to smooth the image sizes as an object moves across the mirror lens.

Abstract

A vehicle mirror comprises a lens, a reflective member disposed so as to receive light from the lens, and a support disposed so as to support the lens and the reflective member. A control system is connected to the reflective member and is effective to control the reflection of the reflective member.
