Abstract

Disclose are various approaches for optimizing operation of an autonomous wireless mobile asset monitoring system. The approaches involve detecting the presence of cargo in a mobile asset. First, if energy conservation is a requirement of the system, each zone of the mobile asset is scanned until cargo is detected in one of the zones. Then, the results of the scan are transmitted to backend infrastructure. Alternatively, if energy conservation is not a requirement of the system, every zone of the mobile asset is scanned and the results of the scan are transmitted to backend infrastructure.

Abstract

A wireless communication system includes one or more application servers communicating with remote terminals over connections established via cellular or satellite networks. The application servers are capable of switching between different cellular networks. A satellite gateway communicates with the remote terminals via satellite connections when cellular service is unavailable. The satellite gateway emulates a cellular network so that the application server sees the satellite gateway as another cellular network.

Abstract

To test whether a trailer is coupled to a tractor when the tractor ignition switch is off, a test switch in the trailer connects a high-impedance power source in a trailer to a line carrying energy from the tractor ignition switch to the trailer's electrical load, and measures the voltage at the line. A high voltage indicates a connection only to the electrical load in the trailer and thus a decouple. A low voltage indicates a measurement of the electrical loads in both trailer and tractor and hence a coupling.

Abstract

Particular implementations are particularly useful in providing a system in which the hardware is more easily upgradable and new hardware functionality may be added without adding any new physical hardware. Through placement of an FPGA closely associated with the CPU of a personal computer, the FPGA may be reconfigured to act as new hardware. A system for installing new virtual hardware involves loading firmware into memory associated with the FPGA and reconfiguring the FPGA through a microcontroller. Particular implementations include universal ports associated with the FPGA into which adapter plugs can be placed to quickly adapt to any device that may be added through the virtual hardware use of the FPGA. Other implementations include high density connectors into which a plurality of ports of varying configurations may be plugged for connection of external electronic equipment through the FPGA.

Abstract

A method of acquiring signals from satellites in a Global Positioning System (GPS) is disclosed. The method includes receiving navigation signals from the satellites of the GPS, down-converting to complex baseband the received navigation signals to form a first signal, digitizing samples of the first signal, nonlinear processing of the digitized samples of the first signal to form a second signal, where the nonlinear processing comprises forming a weighted sum of products of pairs of the digitized samples at different relative delays, in which one of each of the pairs has been complex conjugated, coherent averaging the second signal over integer multiples or submultiples of a spreading sequence period of the navigation signals to form a third signal, performing circular correlation processing of the third signal with a representation of each navigation signal of the navigation signals and determining a timing offset at which a correlated output energy is maximized, based on the circular correlation processing.

Abstract

An automatic identification system (AIS) communications payload for a space vehicle traveling in earth orbit includes an antenna; a receiver connected to the antenna to receive an AIS signal including a reported vessel position transmitted from a vessel; a processor to process the received AIS messages and determine the accuracy of the reported vessel position; and a transmitter to transmit the processed AIS messages and the determined accuracy to a ground earth element. The processor may be configured to determine a position of the space vehicle; compare the reported vessel position to the space vehicle position; and determine the accuracy of the reported vessel position based on the comparison. The processor also may be configured to flag the AIS message as suspect when the reported vessel position is determined to be inaccurate.

Abstract

A spaced-based system to simultaneously track and monitor one or More ocean going vessels at any point on the earth includes a plurality of satellites. Each satellite includes an AIS communications payload to receive AIS signals which have AIS information transmitted from the one or more vessels and to transmit the received AIS information. The system includes ground earth elements that each have a receiver to receive the AIS information transmitted from one or more of the plurality of satellites and globally track and monitor the one or more vessels based on the AIS information received from the communications payload. The satellites are distributed in two or more orbital planes located at a substantially common altitude and at a substantially common inclination.

Abstract

In a freight management system a translator in a monitor system receives and transmits data in standard freight message format from and to a number of users, as well as in a variety of wireless formats to and from freight assets, and automatically in real time translates between the formats. The translator receives sensed data from the freight assets and transmits the translated data to the respective users while transmitting commands in wireless format to the freight assets on the basis of data received in standard freight message format.
