A reaction member (30) is mounted on the intermediate element (28), and a toothed ring gear (35) for rotates with the intermediate element and is axially located between the second end element (27) and the reaction member (30). A leaf spring (31) acts between the second end element (27) and the reaction member (30) for pushing the second end element away from the intermediate element. The leaf spring (31) carries a pawl (36) designed to engage the teeth (35a) of the ring gear (35) for rotation of the ring gear to adjust the effective length of the adjuster. The reaction member (30) has resilient formations which snap into a co-operating formation (43) on the intermediate element.

A drum brake has a pair of brake shoes (40) moveable radially outwardly into contact with an associated brake drum to provide a handbrake function by a cross strut (100) which acts between the brake shoes or between pivoting brake operating levers (14) which actuate the brake shoes. A handbrake lever (18) is pivoted on one brake shoe or brake operating lever (14) and contacts one end of the strut to displace the other brake shoe or brake operating lever towards the drum to apply the associated shoe against the drum and by reaction through the strut to also force the other brake shoe or brake operating lever toward the drum to apply the other shoe against the drum. The strut (100) is in two parts (101,102), one part being connected for movement with each respective brake shoe or operating lever, the strut parts having inter-engageable formations in the form of teeth (103, 104) which when engaged allow the strut (100) to transmit axial force between the shoes or operating levers. Bias means (105,106) are provided for biasing the strut parts apart to disengage the inter-engageable formations to disable the strut, the inter-engageable formations (103, 104) being engaged when the handbrake lever (18) is operated to connect the strut parts (101,102) to allow the brake to be applied and being disengaged when the handbrake lever is released so that the strut parts can disengage and move apart with the brake shoes or brake operating levers to adjust the effective length of the strut as the brake shoes wear.

A drum brake has two brake shoes (11,12), an actuator (14a) located between the shoes which moves the shoes apart into contact with an associated drum, retraction spring means (33) which retract the shoes away from the drum when the actuator is released,, and a cross strut (18) which extends between the shoes and controls the retraction of the shoes away from the drum. The cross-strut is in two parts (18a, 18b) with interengaging tooth means (26,27) on each part which are biased into engagement, to hold the strut at a given effective length. One part (18a) of the cross-strut moves with a first shoe (12) and the other part (18b) of the cross-strut has a nose portion (29) which engages a cut-out (30) in the other shoe (11) with a first clearance (x) which allows the other shoe to move relative to the nose for a first predetermined distance. The shoes moving in opposite directions when applied by the actuator (14a) until the first clearance (x) is taken up and then any further movement required to engage the shoes with the drum results in sliding movement between the first and second parts of the cross-strut. If this required movement exceeds the pitch of the engaging tooth means (26,27) on the strut parts the effective length of the strut is permanently adjusted by re-engagement of tooth means in a new engaged position with different elements of the tooth means in contact in order to maintain the shoe retraction substantially constant as the shoes wear.
