Multi-state switchability is highly desirable in optoelectronic devices. For liquid crystal (LC) based devices, the stability of any configuration is achieved through a balance between imposed interactions and the LC's orientational elasticity. In most cases, the latter acts to resist deformation. By combining surface topography and chemical patterning, provided here are the effects of saddle-splay orientational elasticity, a property that, despite being intrinsic to all LCs, is routinely suppressed. Utilizing theory and continuum elastic calculations, provided here are example conditions for which, even using generic, achiral LC materials, spontaneously broken surface symmetries develop. Also provided are multi-stable devices in which a weak, but directional, applied field switches between spontaneously-polar surface state domains. The disclosed approach is useful in low-field and fast-switching optoelectronic devices, beyond those attainable by current technologies.

Computer implemented methods of compressing and decompressing image data are described. WATER BASED INTUMESCENT COATING FORMULATION ESPECIALLY SUITABLE FOR STRUCTURAL STEEL COMPONENTS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING
Method and apparatus for physical vapour deposition (PVD) and in particular high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) deposition is described. The present apparatus and process provide for the creation of a weaker magnetic field in the region of the cathode which reduces the confinement of a significant part of the plasma near the target surface. By weakening the magnetic field in the region of the target, the deposition rate of materials at a substrate has been found to increase by a factor of 9 relative to that of conventional HIPIMS processes employing typical magnetic field strengths.

A sol-gel derived coating and method of preparing the same is provided. The coating is particularly suitable as an anticorrosion coating and may comprise additional functionality by the incorporation of one or more dopant compounds within the resulting ceramic coating. The sol-gel processing technique comprises formation of gel particulates suspended in a solution based slurry. The slurry is then applied to the substrate to form a first coat. A corrosion detection probe and method of corrosion detection at both a bare metal substrate and a coated metal substrate is provided. The probe, in the form of a solution or coating is capable of fluorescing in response to the generation of metal ions at the metal substrate resulting from corrosion processes. The detection solution comprises a binder configured to increase adhesion of the solution when applied to the substrate. Additionally, a method of applying the formulation to the substrate in the form of a spray, particularly an aerosol, is disclosed. Corrosion of the metal substrate is identified by irradiating the coated substrate with ultra violet light and observing resulting fluorescence.
An organic-inorganic hybrid (ormosil) coating and method of preparing the same is provided. The method of coating preparation involves sol-gel processing techniques in which a first layer is formed from deposition of a sol comprising a curing agent followed by application of a second sol comprising at least one ormosil or ormosil hybrid onto the first layer.
