A thermal management system is provided. The thermal management system includes a housing extending between a leading end and a trailing end. An aspect of the disclosure provides a spectrometer for detecting a substance of interest, the spectrometer comprising: a chamber through which a number of sample ions travel from an ion gate to a collector electrode; a detector, connected to the collector electrode for detecting arrival of sample ions at the collector electrode; a controller configured to: control parameters of the spectrometer to selectively increase or decrease the number of sample ions which pass into the chamber upon each opening of the ion gate, detect arrival of the sample ions at the collector electrode to obtain detection signals during a set of time windows following opening of the ion gate, analyse the detection signals in the time windows according to the parameters of the spectrometer to detect the presence of the substance of interest.
An aspect of the disclosure provides a collector for an ion detector (IMS or MS), the detector configured to detect ions based on their travel time to the collector, the collector comprising: an inner region, and an outer region, preferably arranged coaxially, wherein the outer region is electrically isolated from the inner region; a first electrical connection for connecting the inner region to detection electronics, and a second electrical connection for connecting the outer region to the detection electronics; wherein the inner region and the outer region are each arranged to collect ions and to provide a detection signal to the detection electronics in response to arrival of the ions at the collector.
