Abrégé

Acoustically assisted magnetic recording can be used in a hard disk drive or a solid state medium. In the described embodiments, otherwise unwriteable high-coercivity media are made amenable to recording by lowering their coercivity via strain induced by acoustic waves. The use of acoustic waves temporarily and locally reduces the magnetic field required to record information on a magnetic recording medium. The process makes use of the magnetostrictive property of a magnetic material by which the magnetic anisotropy of the material is changed by strain. The result of such a change is a reduction in the coercive field, i.e., the magnetic field required to reverse the magnetization direction. Because acoustic waves cause strain, the passage of an acoustic wave through a magnetic material can be used to reduce its coercive field.

Abrégé

A method to generate siRNAs in vivo is described, as are constructs and compositions useful in the method. The method does not depend on the use of DNA or synthetic constructs that contain inverted duplications or dual promoters so as to form perfect or largely double-stranded RNA. Rather, the method depends on constructs that yield single-stranded RNA transcripts, and exploits endogenous or in vivo-produced miRNAs or siRNAs to initiate production of siRNAs. The miRNAs or siRNAs guide cleavage of the transcript and set the register for production of siRNAs (usually 21 nucleotides in length) encoded adjacent to the initiation cleavage site within the construct. The method results in specific formation of siRNAs of predictable size and register (phase) relative to the initiation cleavage site. The method can be used to produce specific siRNAs in vivo for inactivation or suppression of one or more target genes or other entities, such as pathogens.

Abrégé

Embodiments of the present system and method are useful for chemical deposition, particularly continuous deposition of anti-reflective films. Disclosed systems typically comprise a micromixer and a microchannel applicator. A deposition material or materials is applied to a substrate to form a nanostructured, anti-reflective coating. Uniform and highly oriented surface morphologies of films deposited using disclosed embodiments are clearly improved compared to films deposited by a conventional batch process. In some embodiments, a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective coating is applied to a polycarbonate substrate, such as a lens. In certain embodiments, an anti-reflective coating is applied to a surface of a solar catalytic microreactor suitable for performing endothermic reactions, where energy is provided to the reactor by absorption of solar radiation. The composition and morphology of the material deposited on a substrate can be tailored. The process can be used at low temperatures as a post-deposition, high-temperature annealing step is obviated.

Abrégé

A method to generate siRNAs in vivo is described, as are constructs and compositions useful in the method. The method does not depend on the use of DNA or synthetic constructs that contain inverted duplications or dual promoters so as to form perfect or largely double -stranded RNA.

Abrégé

The present invention provides a method of simultaneously screening at least two candidate agents for an activity affecting regeneration of an embryonic teleost. According to this method, for each agent, a fin of the embryonic teleost is amputated. Next, the amputated teleost is incubated with the candidate agent for a specified period of time. After this period of time, the amputated teloeost is imaged. This image is compared to an image of an amputated teleost that was incubated for the specified period of time in the absence of the candidate agent. When comparing the images, a change in morphology of the amputated fin of the embryonic teleost incubated in the presence of the candidate agent compared to the amputated fin of the embryonic teleost raised in the absence of the candidate agent indicates that the candidate agent affects regeneration.

Abrégé

Embodiments of a method for using a microreactor to produce biodiesel. For example, the method may comprise flowing a first fluid comprising an alcohol and a second fluid comprising an oil to the microreactor. Alcohols typically, but not necessarily, are lower aliphatic alcohols, including methanol, ethanol, amyl alcohol or combinations thereof. Biodiesel production can be under supercritical conditions, where such conditions typically are determined relative to the alcohol component. Suitable sources of oil products include soy, inedible tallow and grease, corn, edible tallow and lard, cotton, rapeseed, sunflower, canola, peanut, safflower, and combinations thereof. Catalysts can be used to facilitate biodiesel production, such as metal oxides, metal hydroxides, metal carbonates, alcoholic metal carbonates, alkoxides, mineral acids and enzymes. Oil conversion to biodiesel typically increases with increasing mean microreactor residence time. Certain embodiments of the present invention can include blending biodiesel produced by the method with petroleum-based products.

Abrégé

A method of fabricating nanotubes or nanofibers uses catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of hydrocarbons (e.g., methane) on support materials (e.g., powders of SiO) impregnated with a catalyst (e.g., Ni and/or Fe metal salts). After the CVD process, the nanotubes may be purified by sublimating the support material at a temperature higher than the CVD process temperature. In one embodiment, carbon nanotubes are obtained by sublimating a SiO support at 1200 °C. In an alternate embodiment, silicon carbide nanotubes, or a mixture of silicon carbide and carbon nanotubes, are fabricated using a sublimation temperature of 1350 °C or higher.

Abrégé

The present disclosure provides methods that decrease the interaction between tannins found in wine (such as polymeric tannins) and lysozyme added to wine as an antimicrobial agent, for example by adding a tannin-binding agent to the wine prior to adding lysozyme to the wine. In particular examples, such methods increase lysozyme antimicrobial activity (for example by increasing the effective lysozyme concentration) in the wine, since lysozyme bound to tannin is not available for providing antimicrobial activity. Also provided are methods for making wine. Compositions that include wine, lysozyme, and one or more tannin-binding agents that decrease the interaction between tannins and lysozyme are also disclosed.

Abrégé

Oxidative stress, resulting from the generation of reactive oxygen species, contributes to the development of a multitude of age-related diseases. Current methods of assessing oxidative stress levels range from the detection of lipid peroxidation products, such as F2-isoprostanes and malondialdehyde, to monitoring the redox status of glutathione. While useful, traditional biomarkers of oxidative stress are not without their drawbacks, including low in vitro concentrations and possible artifact formation. Disclosed herein are new marker compounds, including ascorbylated 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal, that are useful as biomarkers of oxidative stress.
