The foam may comprise poly(vinyl alcohol), starch, and a phenolic acid.
Methods and compositions are provided for oxidizing peptides and forming disulfide bonds. In some aspects, a rapid, green, and facile oxidation of peptides (e.g., cysteine containing peptides) is performed (e.g., to promote the formation of 1-3 or more disulfide bonds). In some aspects, methods are conducted in aqueous solutions, in air, utilizing a biocompatible corrin ring-containing compound (e.g., dicyanocobinamide). In some aspects, reaction times are under 1 hour and a simple one step removal of the catalyst can be performed.
A strategy for bacterial persister control using amphiphilic antibiotics that do not require active transport to penetrate bacterial membranes of persister cells. Persister cells have reduced drug efflux and accumulate more minocycline than normal cells, leading to effective killing of this dormant subpopulation upon wake-up. While dormancy is a well-known cause of antibiotic tolerance, it also provides an Achilles' heel for controlling persister cells by leveraging dormancy associated reduction of drug efflux.

MECHANOPHORE WITH FORCE TRIGGERED STEREOCHEMISTRY CONVERSION
A parallel diarylethene mechanophore with mirror symmetry may be converted to its anti-parallel stereoisomer of C2 symmetry under ultrasound-induced force field. Concomitantly, the stereochemistry-converted material gains new stereochemistry-selective activity to undergo photocyclization reactions. The mechanophore thus uses a mechanical approach to converting the axial chirality of a sterically congested diarylethene molecule, modifying its molecular symmetry and its physical and chemical properties in response to an mechanical stimulus.
Artificial lipoproteins bearing non-canonical post-translational modifications that are synthesized by leveraging substrate promiscuity of an acyltransferase. The non-canonical functionality of these lipoprotein results in a distinctive hysteretic assembly that is absent from the canonical lipoproteins and is used to prepare hybrid multiblock materials with precise and programmable patterns of amphiphilicity due to the unique assembly and function of the non-canonical post-translational modifications.

SURFACE TOPOGRAPHY WITH FERROMAGNETIC POLYMER PILLARS CAPABLE OF MOVEMENT IN RESPONSE TO MAGNETIC FIELDS
An anti-fouling surface having micron scale pillars embedded with Fe3O4 nanoparticles is designed. The pillars may be repeatedly induced to move according to a predetermined frequency, such as one that mimic that of the beating movement of natural cilia, through the application of a magnetic field. When square-shaped pillars with a height of 10 μm, width of 2 μm, and inter-pattern distance of 5 μm actuated for three minutes, more than 99.9 percent of biofilm cells were detached and via gentle rinsing from the surface having the pillars. The anti-fouling surface enables effective prevention of biofilm formation and removal of established biofilms, and can be applied to a broad spectrum of polymers.
An apparatus and method for shaping double-network hydrogels into customized 3D structures. A one-pot prepolymer formulation containing photo-cross-linkable acrylamide and thermoreversible sol-gel κ-carrageenan with a suitable crosslinker, and photo-initiator/absorbers was used. The formulation was polymerized using a TOPS system with heating stage to photo-polymerize the primary acrylamide network into a 3D structure above the sol-gel transition of κ-carrageenan (80° C.). Cooling down then generates the secondary physical κ-carrageenan network to realize tough double-network hydrogel structures. Printed 3D structures had superior lateral (37 μm) and vertical (180 μm) resolutions and 3D design freedoms (internal voids) that exhibit ultimate stress and strain of 200 kPa and 2400% respectively under tension, and simultaneously exhibit high compression stress of 15 MPa with a strain of 95%, both with high recovery rates. The apparatus and method can be employed with other double-network hydrogels to make multifunctional soft devices for a range of applications.

Thin elastic films that can spontaneously attach to liquid interfaces, thereby offering a platform for tailoring their physical, chemical, and optical properties. Curved shells can be used to manipulate interfaces in qualitatively different ways. For example, an ultrathin shell with vanishing bending rigidity can impose its own rest shape on a liquid surface, in a process where the pressure across the interface inflates the shell into its original shape. The approach is amenable to optical applications as the shell is transparent, free of wrinkles, and may be manufactured over a range of curvatures.
A steerable robotic needle formed from a compliant wire that is surrounded by an inner layer having one or more tunable regions positioned in predetermined locations and an inert region extending over the rest of the wire. The tunable region changes stiffness in response to an external trigger, such as heating via electrical energy, so that the needle can bend more readily in the predetermined location. The inner layer may be encapsulated in an elastomeric tube to prevent heat from reaching the surrounding environment. The resulting change in stiffness allows the needle to perform maneuvers in a body that require a larger curvature.

ANTI-WETTING, NON-STICK SURFACES FROM A PHOTOPOLYMER-NANOPARTICLE FORMULATION
A polymer film having a non-planar surface defined by a series of surface bumps and a plurality of nanoparticles in the polymer film, wherein the nanoparticles are more concentrated proximately to surface and in the surface bumps to provide anti-wetting and anti-stick properties. The polymer coating is formed by casting a thin layer of a photopolymerizable polymer precursor having a plurality of nanoparticles over a transparent substrate and then irradiating the thin layer from below with a periodic light field so that the photopolymerizable polymer precursor forms a polymer with a non-planar surface and the nanoparticles are concentrated proximately to the non-planar surface as a result of phase separation. The resulting film can be washed with a solvent to remove any uncured polymer and peeled away from the substrate for use as an anti-stick and anti-wetting coating.
A two-stage treatment process for destroying per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in an aqueous stream. The two-stage treatment process uses a combination of multifunctional crystalline molecular sieves, such as zeolites and zeotypes, to separate PFAS from the aqueous stream, catalytically decompose and defluorinate any PFAS molecules, and generate non-toxic waste products that are safe for disposal. The first stage includes adsorption of the PFAS within one of a pair of vessels containing porous, hydrophobic, hydrothermally stable molecular sieves, dehydration of the captured PFAS on the sieves, and catalytic ozonation of the captured PFAS molecules on the dried sieves. The second stage involves catalytic decomposition and neutralization of the ozonation results with one of a pair of vessels including a zeolite-supported CaO catalyst, catalytic oxidation of any toxic CO generated by the decomposition, and an acid wash for regeneration of the spent catalyst.

A method of forming complex ceramic structures without altering the ceramic microstructure. A tape cast ceramic substrate is masked and then sprayed with a film having a different thermal expansion coefficient than the tape cast ceramic substrate. The mask is removed to leave the desired pattern of film on the tape ceramic substrate. As the substrate and film cools down from the peak sintering temperature, deformation occurs due to the different thermal expansion coefficients. By varying film thickness and deposition pattern, the composite can be designed to deform only in certain areas, allowing for well-controlled folding of the tape cast ceramic composite to provide for folding into complex shapes.

HIGHLY TUNABLE DRY ADHESION OF SOFT HOLLOW PILLARS THROUGH SIDEWALL BUCKLING UNDER LOW PRESSURE
An approach to achieve highly tunable adhesion using low pressure by inducing sidewall buckling in soft hollow pillars (SHPs). Dry adhesion of these SHPs can be changed by two orders of magnitude (up to 145×) using low activating pressure (˜−10 kPa or ˜20 kPa). Negative pressure triggers sidewall buckling while positive pressure induces sidewall bulging, both of which can significantly change stress distribution at the bottom surface to facilitate crack initiation and reduce adhesion therein. A single SHP can be activated by a micropump to manipulate various lightweight objects with different curvature and surface texture. An array of SHPs can realize selective pick-and-place of an array of objects. Minor modifications to the SHPs in terms of geometry and material (with or without cap, circular or noncircular cross section) can further enhance the adhesion tuning performance of these SHPs.

A complex of magnesium maltol that can deliver magnesium via oral administration at a low cost. The magnesium maltol is formed by dissolving an amount of maltol in water. A solution of citric acid and magnesium oxide is added to the maltol, allowed to react, and then dried to obtain magnesium maltol. The approach may also be used to produce magnesium ethylmaltol. Cellular uptake studies demonstrate that both magnesium maltol and magnesium ethylmaltol provide a substantial uptake of magnesium and thus the complexes offer a route for magnesium supplementation such as that needed by patients with hypomagnesemia.

A programmable assembly of proteins into well-defined nanoworms with broadened stability regimes is disclosed. Posttranslational modifications (PTMs) were used to generate lipidated proteins with precise topological and compositional asymmetry. Using an integrated experimental and computational approach, the material properties (thermoresponse and nanoscale assembly) of these hybrid amphiphiles are modulated by their amphiphilic architecture. The judicious choice of amphiphilic architecture can be used to program the assembly of proteins into adaptive nanoworms that undergo a morphological transition (sphere-to-nanoworms) in response to temperature stimuli.

A patterned surface structure formed from a ferrofluidic polymer resin having a plurality of magnetic nanoparticles. The polymer resin is patterned with a magnetic field that is applied to the ferrofluidic polymer resin during curing. The ferrofluidic polymer resin may be cast over a non-magnetic planar substrate. A magnetic field is applied to the ferrofluidic polymer resin to induce a pattern in a surface of the ferrofluidic polymer resin. The patterned ferrofluidic polymer resin is then cured to form the permanently patterned surface.
A developmental toxicity screening assay using spatially organized cardiac organoids with contracting cardiomyocytes in the center surrounded by stromal cells distributed along the pattern perimeter engineered from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). Cardiac organoids generated from 600 μm-diameter circles were used as a developmental toxicity screening assay for the quantification of the embryotoxic potential of nine pharmaceutical compounds. The cardiac organoids were demonstrated as having a potential use as an in vitro platform for studying organoid structure-function relationships, developmental processes, and drug-induced cardiac developmental toxicity.

An HVAC control system having a cloud-based optimization engine in communication with a local building hub that interfaces with the building HVAC system and room units. The cloud-based optimization engine implements an optimal and predictive control strategy to integrate occupancy prediction, weather forecasting, and modeling of indoor infection risk, indoor air quality, and building energy consumptions. The control strategy includes a model-based predictive control and a model-free reinforcement learning approach. The control strategy considers outdoor weather (both thermal and air quality) conditions, indoor occupancy and requirements for IAQ and infectious risk reduction to decide whether outdoor air should be introduced and how much fresh air will be introduced into the space. Communications with the building hub allow the local HVAC unit to be driven according to the optimization plan. Individual room sensing units can provide local sensor data to the cloud-based optimization engine.

Imaging agents that can bind to ghrelin O-acyltransferase (GOAT) without binding to the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a). The imaging agents comprise a base structure for selective binding to GOAT that is coupled via an amino acid linker to a chemical group to enable imaging such as a fluorescent label, radioactive tracer, or metal chelator. For example, the imaging agent may comprise a ghrelin substrate mimetic inhibitor incorporating an unmodified 2,3-diaminopropanoic acid (Dap) group at the site analogous to serine 3. These agents enable specific detection and imaging of GOAT versus the GHS-R1a receptor in a variety of biological contexts.

A series of chimeric peptides that provide a mechanism for obesity treatment concomitant with T2DM in the form of dual agonism of the anorectic neuropeptide Y-receptor (Y2-R) and the glucoregulatory receptor GLP1-R. Preliminary results show that, dependent on the selected peptide, once-daily administration suppress FI in male and female rats can be reduced to 12-65% compared to baseline conditions before treatment, dependent on dose and age of animals, and glucose tolerance can be improved as well. Peptides also demonstrated Y1-receptor agonism, conferring protection on beta-islet cells against inflammatory damage. The peptides were designed by targeting serial anorectic pathways simultaneously and are promising candidates for modulating FI and glucoregulation in an efficacious and safe way.

Superconducting metamaterials for quantum simulations and qubit addressability in quantum processors
Superconducting metamaterials composed of lumped-element inductors and capacitors are used to implement microwave photonics with novel dispersion relations and dense mode spectra that can be coupled to qubits. Metamaterial lattices may have qubits coupled to different unit cells in the metamaterial such that each qubit will couple strongly to modes with an antinode at the qubit location. Through simultaneous driving of combinations of modes, large amplitudes are produced at only one or a few unit cells, resulting in large ac Stark shifts of qubits located there, and providing a frequency-addressable qubit array without requiring flux-tunability and with reduced control wiring.

SYNTHESIS OF SUPERHYDROPHOBIC MICROPOROUS SURFACES VIA LIGHT-DIRECTED PHTOPOLYMERIZATION AND PHASE SEPARATION
The formation of microporous surfaces through polymer induced phase separation in a photopolymer solvent mixture using photopolymerization via light self-focusing and self-trapping. The self-trapping of light sets fixed regions of brightness and darkness, sustained by the polymerization of light, and then wave guiding within the substrate. Phase separation occurs with the solvent phase separating in the regions of darkness and crosslinking in the regions of brightness. Upon removal of the solvent, precise and uniformly dispersed pores are created in the surface. The pore size and spacing may be tuned by adjusting the weight fraction of the photopolymer solvent mixture as well as through changes in the mask pattern.

An approach for differentially isolating eukaryotic (plant and animal) DNA from bacterial DNA prior to sequencing using a combination of size exclusion-based separation and differential cell lysis. The method of the present invention exploits the differences of the cellular size and components of each type of organism to be separated. The composition and nature of the cell wall of plant cells, enzymatic sensitivity of bacterial and animal cells and overall size difference of bacterial and plant/animal cells allows one portion of a mixed sample to be lysed while retaining the integrity of the remaining organisms. Separation of one phylogenetic component then permits the remaining components to be extracted with minimal contribution from the preceding component. The separation of DNAs from differing contributing kingdoms in an unknown sample increases interpretability through decreasing complexity in subsequent sequencing applications.

A quantum computing transducer having a dense, tunable superconducting metamaterial transmission line (SMTL) spectrum that can resonantly enhance sideband scattering. The resonant enhancement of scattering boosts the scattering rate, and hence also the microwave-to-optical-interface (MOQI) transduction efficiency. Moreover, the integration of mechanical elements with the SMTL to realize the MOQI yields a platform that can be readily interfaced on chip, such as in an integrated circuit, with superconducting-qubit architectures to facilitate the local implementation of two of the essential functionalities required for a quantum repeater, i.e., data egress/ingress and a quantum processing module.

A system and method for automated detection of figure element reuse. The system can receive articles or other publications from a user input or an automated input. The system then extracts images from the articles and compares them to reference images from a historical database. The comparison and detection of matches occurs via a copy-move detection algorithm implemented by a processor of the system. The processor first locates and extracts keypoints from a submission image and finds matches between those keypoints and the keypoints from a reference image using a near neighbor algorithm. The matches are clustered and the clusters are compared for keypoint matching. Matched clusters are further compared for detectable transformations. The processor may additionally implement natural language processing to filter matches based on the context of the use of the submission image in the submission and a patch detector for removing false positive features.

Cooling charge determination for a local thermal management system
A system and method for estimating the state of charge, i.e., the amount of cooling remaining, in a latent heat thermal storage module of a local environmental control system. The local environmental control system stores cooling energy at night by freezing a latent heat phase change material (PCM), and then releasing the stored cooling energy by removing heat from room air flowing through the PCM during the day. Differential temperature sensors are used measure the air temperature drop across the latent thermals storage unit and the fan voltage, which is directly related to fan air flow rate, is sampled. A controller is programmed to determine the charging state from these measurements.

A dual chamber solid oxide fuel cell integrated into the exhaust stream of an internal combustion engine, in which engine exhaust gases are routed to the anode of a tubular solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and heated secondary air is supplied to the cathode of the SOFC. The secondary air supply is heated using the existing engine temperature and exhaust gas temperature through a heat exchanger formed by a modified cylinder head and exhaust manifold. The dual chamber solid oxide fuel provides the necessary hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide scrubbing to achieve mandatory catalytic conversion for vehicle operation. In addition, the dual chamber solid oxide fuel cell is capable of generating sufficient electrical power for the vehicle. Omission of conventional catalytic convertors and alternators allows for improved efficiency and fuel economy of the internal combustion engine.
