The invention relates to a method for controlling a melt spinning process for producing threads and to a melt spinning apparatus for producing synthetic threads. In this case a plurality of process parameters of a plurality of process steps of melt generation, filament extrusion, thread treatment and thread winding are monitored. Moreover, at least one of a plurality of condition parameters is monitored on each of the threads. The respective actual values of the condition parameters and the respective actual values of the process parameters are jointly analysed. In order to facilitate a targeted intervention in the process, at least one target value of one of the process parameters is determined from the actual values of the condition parameters and the actual values of the process parameters and the relevant process step is changed over automatically to setting the process parameter. For carrying out the process steps the melt spinning apparatus has a melt generating device, a melt spinning device, a treatment device and a winding device. For controlling the devices a machine controller is provided, which is connected to a monitoring device for receiving condition parameters and to the devices for carrying out the process steps for receiving process parameters. In this case the machine controller has a changeover module in order from the actual values of the condition parameters and the actual values of the process parameters to generate at least one control command for automatic changeover of one of the process steps of one of the devices to a target value of one of the process parameters.
