Methods and systems that improve network performance in time-slotted multi-hop wireless networks, e.g., a Barrage Relay network, are described. In an aspect, the broadcast nature of the Barrage Relay network is leveraged to enable a source node to aggregates unicast packets across multiple destinations with the same priority in one Medium Access Control (MAC) Protocol Data Unit (MPDU). This aggregation advantageously enables a single request message to be sent to a network controller for multiple unicast packets destined for multiple destinations, thereby reducing the contention channel access significantly. In addition, minimal pipeline flushing allows the source node to be scheduled sooner than is required to fully flush the spatial pipeline. This advantageously enables scheduling of queued source nodes to minimize the sum switching delay.

Methods and systems for improving communication using angle dithering
Methods and systems for improving communication using angle dithering are presented. Embodiments of the present invention provide increased throughput and robustness after link establishment by providing fast fading characteristics in environments dominated by slow fading. In particular, fast fading characteristics are induced by steering the transmitter and receiver antennas in optical and beyond line-of-sight troposcatter communication systems based on dither patterns. In non-line-of-sight (NLOS) communication systems, using coordinated dither patterns at the transmitter and receiver ensures that successive common scattering volumes become decorrelated, whereas in line-of-sight optical communication systems, the dither pattern is based on the tropospheric scintillation in free space traversed by the established link.

Devices, systems and methods for analog automatic gain control (AGC) based on estimated distributions of signal characteristics are described. One example method includes generating a digital measurement of a first signal characteristic based on a second signal characteristic of an input signal received by the device, where the second signal characteristic is based on a level of the input signal. The digital measurement of the signal characteristic is used to update a statistical model for the input signal and the posterior probability distribution of the second signal characteristic conditioned on previous digital measurements of the first signal characteristic. The updated posterior probability distribution is used to generate a gain estimate, which is then used to adjust the power level of the input signal. Another example method may use multiple statistical models for each waveform supported by the system.

A method and system for maximizing throughput and minimiz- ing latency in a communication system that supports heterogeneous links is pre- sented. The communication system supports a primary link and an alternate link, and the method and system leverage the alternate link to reduce the overhead transmitted over the primary link, thereby increasing throughput and reducing end-to-end latency. The higher latency alternate link provides a delayed version of an information signal that corresponds to a portion of the information signal that is transmitted on the primary link. The received samples from the primary and alternate links may be used to equalize subsequent portions of the informa- tion signal received over the primary link, and may also be used for synchro- nization, timing recovery, DC offset removal, I/Q imbalance compensation, and frequency-offset estimation.

Methods and systems for estimating and mitigating OFDM interference
Methods and systems for estimating and mitigating OFDM interference to enable reliable communications with minimal a priori knowledge of the interfering OFDM signal are presented. The estimation and mitigation of swept-tone interferers includes receiving a composite signal comprising a signal of interest and a swept-tone interferer over an observation bandwidth or a hop bandwidth in a frequency -hopping system. The estimation of the interfering signal may be based on modeling the interferer as a magnitude periodic signal comprising non-overlapping, contiguous epochs, where each epoch may comprise a common pulse shape and a distinct phase rotation. The modeling may be based over the observation bandwidth, the hop bandwidth, or after combining the signal over all the frequency hop bandwidths. The period of the magnitude-periodic signal may be initially determined, and the common pulse shape and each of the distinct phase rotations may then be estimated. These estimates may be used to reconstruct an estimate of the swept-tone interferer, which may be subtracted from the composite signal to generate an interference-mitigated signal of interest.

Methods and systems for maximizing throughput for rate-adaptive wireless communication
Throughput for rate-adaptive wireless communication is maximized by accounting for the rate loss associated with selecting a transmission rate as a function of the actual rate supported by the channel. An optimal rate is selected by minimizing a set of average cost functions; each of the average cost functions is based on the delayed LQMs and rate-loss cost functions associated with selecting a candidate transmission rate as a function of a maximum rate supported by the channel.

Method and system for coordinating access to a barrage relay network
Methods for coordinating access to a barrage relay networks are disclosed. For example, one disclosed method includes: receiving, by a first node, a first message from a second node on a network; suppressing transmission of messages by the first node; receiving, by the first node, a second message corresponding to the first message or waiting a sufficient amount of time without receipt of the second message; reactivating transmission of the messages by the first node.
Methods and systems for on-demand adaptation of packet time-to-live in time-slotted barrage relay networks are disclosed. For example, one disclosed method includes: transmitting a first packet from a first node in a wireless ad hoc network to a second node in the wireless ad hoc network; determining a first path distance, in terms of number of hops, from the first node to the second node, based on the first packet transmission; transmitting a second packet from the second node to the first node, wherein the second packet includes content representing the first path distance; and determining a time-to-live value for subsequent transfers from the first node to the second node, by taking into account the first path distance, wherein the time-to-live value limits the number of hops each packet is allowed to take in subsequent transfers from the first node to the second node.

Systems and methods are presented for establishing network-wide time synchronization in a time-slotted barrage relay network. In the first phase, nodes obtain coarse, slot-level time synchronization by estimating the time-of-arrival (TOA) of a message that rapidly floods the network via the barrage relay mechanism. In the second phase, fine time synchronization is achieved via a messaging protocol that exchanges TOA information between neighboring nodes.
Systems and methods are presented for topology discovery in a multi-hop ad hoc network. The method operates on two time and distance scales. Nodes periodically transmit messages to their immediate neighbors that enable the discovery of their two-hop network topologies (i.e., within two hops). Less frequently, nodes broadcast messages network-wide that enable the discovery of the global network topology at all nodes. In multi-hop ad hoc network architectures that are characterized by efficient broadcast protocols—e.g., Barrage Relay Networks—the proposed method provides a particularly efficacious means for global topology discovery.

The disclosure proposes bit-error-rate (BER) and symbol-error-rate (SER) estimation techniques and its application to incremental-redundancy and rate-adaptation for modern-coded hybrid-ARQ systems. In particular, BER/SER estimators are proposed based on iterative refinement of mixture-density modeling of the bit/symbol decision metrics. For hybrid-ARQ systems, rate-adaptation functions are proposed based on BER/SER estimators for failed transmissions. Methods are disclosed for code-rate selection based on successfully decoded blocks as well as incremental parity size selection for retransmission of failed blocks Techniques disclosed here apply to forward-error-correction codes employed for digital data communication systems.
A method and system are provided in a wireless communications system comprising a plurality of nodes (users) working cooperatively. The system provides cooperative diversity by allowing nodes to actively share their antennas and other resources to obtain spatial diversity. The nodes receive the same message (information data) from a common source. Each node enhances the reliability of the message with a modern forward error correction (FEC) code, converts the FEC encoded message into an ensemble of symbols, divides the ensemble of symbols into packets, modulates, dithers and transmits the packets to a receiving node. The dithering process is performed by varying the signal amplitude, phase, frequency and/or symbol timing of the modulated packets. A unique dither pattern is assigned to each node. The receiving node captures a composite signal comprising the transmitted packets of all or most of the transmitting nodes in the cooperative communications system. Because the transmitted packets are dithered independently in phase and/or amplitude, spatial diversity is transformed into temporal diversity.

SAM is a very attractive memory option for systems due to its higher speed and reduced area when compared to RAM. However it is generally not used in implementations of FECCs due to its limitation to sequential accesses. According to the present invention, Forward Error Correcting Code encoder and decoder structures are shown to allow the use of SAM in their memory designs. Thus SAM is utilized in FECC implementations to achieve better area efficiency for the same amount of memory as well as higher throughput for the hardware implementations.
