A system for treatment of wastewater including water, soluble and particulate organic carbon, and ammonia. The system includes first and second moving bed biofilm reactors. Each of the moving bed biofilm reactors includes a tank defining a tank volume therein. One or both of the moving bed biofilm reactors also includes partition walls positioned in the tank volume thereof. The partition walls divide the tank volume into at least upstream and downstream tank compartments. The system also includes an intermediate clarifier that is located downstream from the first moving bed biofilm reactor and upstream relative to the second moving bed biofilm reactor.
A septic system, including a septic tank and a pipe positioned within the septic tank, is provided. The pipe receives sewage and provides a flooded, anaerobic environment for sewage passing therethrough. The outlet of the pipe is positioned inside the septic tank and is optionally spaced from the outlet of the septic tank. In operation, the sewage introduced into the pipe generally separates into a solid portion comprising sludge, which remains in the pipe, and a liquid portion, which passes through and around the sludge. In one embodiment, the septic system has an absence of a sump chamber upstream of the septic tank.

In an apparatus for treating wastewater, e.g sewage water, the water passes through a standard treatment process stream to promote production of dissolved reactive phosphate ions (PO4). Iron (or aluminum) ions are generated by electrochemical means and added to the process stream at one or more locations to produce metal-P coagulant solids removed in part by pump-out, with the substantial remaining P removed by mineralization and filtration in a biological filter such as a sand filter or leach field. In another apparatus, the water passes through a standard aerobic treatment process stream to promote production of dissolved reactive phosphate ions. Iron (or aluminum) ions are generated by electrochemical means and added to the process stream at one or more locations to produce a flocculant of Fe—P minerals that are separated out by sedimentation, physical filtration or magnetic means.

The water to be treated might be river water which needs to be clarified, or might be septic tank effluent which needs to have its BOD and dissolved organics content diminished, and its ammonium oxidized. Treatment is done by passing the water through a block of soft open-cell foam. The block of foam is rectanguloid in its basic form. The block of foam is housed in a watertight box. The rectanguloid form enables minimal hydraulic heads, and is simple and cheap to manufacture and install.
