Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) act as a dispersing agent to directly exfoliate graphite in an aqueous solution using sonication. The resulting suspension has graphite flakes, each having 2-20 monolayers, a relatively large lateral dimension, and a plurality of CNF decorating its surfaces and edges. The dispersing effect of the CNF allows the graphite-CNF suspension to be stored without degradation until desired use. The graphite-CNF suspension can be used to form various composite structures, such as by spraying, coating, pouring, extruding, or printing the suspension, and then drying the suspension. The resulting composite structures have improved tensile strength and toughness due to hydrogen bond interactions between the CNF and graphite.

A gondola car is made of high strength and high abrasion resistance steel that provides a lightweight structure and that prolongs the useful life of the car. The high strength and high abrasion resistance steel enhances the strength of the gondola car without increasing its thickness. The contemplated railcar positions components (e.g., side posts and cross-bearers) of the railcar away from areas of the railcar that experience high stresses during transport. In this manner, these components can be welded to form the railcar, and the welds will experience less stress during transport resulting in less weld breaks. Additionally, the number of components (e.g., side posts and cross-bearers) may be reduced, which reduces the weight of the railcar.

Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) act as a dispersing agent to directly exfoliate graphite in an aqueous solution using sonication. The resulting suspension has graphite flakes, each having 2- 20 monolayers, a relatively large lateral dimension, and a plurality of CNF decorating its surfaces and edges.
This disclosure generally relates to railroad cars, and more particularly to a modular railcar with a common underframe that may be coupled with various top containers. A particular problem is that some railcars may prematurely be taken out of service because the railcar body may not match current market needs. The rest of the railcar, however, remains usable, which results in inefficiency and waste. Particular embodiments obviate the problems described above and include a common underframe that may be coupled to a plurality of different top containers. According to some embodiments, a modular railcar comprises: a pair of trucks disposed near each end of the modular railcar; an underframe coupled to the pair of trucks and supported by the pair of trucks. The underframe comprises a plurality of coupling apparatus. The plurality of coupling apparatus are configured to couple a modular top container to the underframe.

According to some embodiments, a discharge door locking system for a railcar discharge door comprises a lock piston configured to move between a first position (not engaged with an operating beam coupled to a discharge door) and a second position (engaged). The locking system comprises a first and second input. Activation of the first input moves the lock piston to the first position, and activation of the second input moves the lock piston to the second position. The first input of the locking system is coupled to a first input of an operating cylinder coupled to the operating beam. The first input of the operating cylinder is configured to move the discharge door to the open position. The second input of the locking system is coupled to a second input of the operating cylinder. The second input is configured to move the discharge door to the closed position.

A torque box includes a front plate and a bottom surface. The bottom surface is coupled to the front plate such that the bottom surface is orthogonal to front plate and such that front plate extends along the bottom surface. The bottom surface defines a first raised portion configured to fit over a wheel of a railcar.

According to some embodiments, a railcar comprises a center sill extending along a longitudinal centerline of the railcar, and two side sills. The two side sills are on opposite sides of, and extend parallel with, the center sill. The railcar further comprises a first inner discharge door coupled to the railcar proximate the center sill on a first sick of a longitudinal centerline of the railcar (first side); a second inner discharge door coupled to the railcar proximate the center sill on a second side of the longitudinal centerline (second side); a first outer discharge door coupled proximate the side sill on the first side; a second outer discharge door coupled proximate the side sill on the second side; a first linkage coupling the first inner discharge door to the second outer discharge door; and a second linkage coupling the second inner discharge door to the first outer discharge door.

According to some embodiments, a railcar comprises: an underframe comprising a center sill extending longitudinally along a centerline of the railcar; a hopper coupled to the underframe and comprising a discharge opening; and a discharge assembly coupled to the hopper. The discharge assembly comprises: a sloped side sheet, and a discharge gate frame in a plane offset from horizontal and extending from a bottom of the sloped side sheet to proximate the center sill. The discharge gate frame at least partially surrounds the discharge opening. The discharge assembly further comprises a discharge gate coupled to the discharge gate frame. The discharge gate is operable to move from a closed position that restricts a lading from discharging to an open position that permits the lading to discharge. Moving from the closed position to the open position comprises moving at an angle upward and transverse to the railcar.
