The invention relates to a device for comminuting plastic grains (22) present in the form of granulate for producing powdery substances, - having a roll (30), which has an axis (32) about which the roll rotates, and which has a substantially smooth cylindrical surface (34) that is arranged centrally with respect to the axis (32), - a cladding (36) enclosing the roll (30), - a tubular, free interior space (40) limited by the roll (30) and the cladding (36), - at least one product inlet (28) for the plastic grains (22), wherein the inlet opens into the interior space (40) and the plastic grains (22) arrive at the surface (34) from said inlet, - at least one product outlet (44), which leads out of the interior space (40), for discharging the particles of the powdery substance, wherein the surface (34) moves at a speed v of at least 5 m/s relative to the plastic particles (22). The plastic grains (22) come into contact with the surface (34), as a result of which they are only heated and comminuted to particles locally in the region of the contact surface.
