The functional condition of an induction crucible furnace is checked by first establishing a set-point parameter corresponding to an optimum functional condition of the induction crucible furnace and characterizing the vibratory behavior of same. Then, during normal operation of the furnace, an actual-value parameter of the vibratory behavior is determined. These two parameters are then compared and, if a magnitude of a difference therebetween exceeds a threshold, an alarm is generated.

A method and an apparatus for automatically detecting the intactness of ground electrodes in the bath of an induction furnace are described. According to the method a low DC or AC current is applied to an additional insulated electrode extending through the furnace bottom and being in connection with the melt. After melting of the charge this current is measured and compared with a reference value. If the magnitude of the current drops below the reference value an alarm signal is generated. Furthermore, methods and devices for localizing a ground fault are described. By this, the security of the operation of an induction furnace is improved.

A method and an apparatus for detecting a ground fault in an induction furnace as well as an induction furnace are described. When a ground fault is detected by means of the ground-fault detector the ground fault is localized. By doing this it is determined if the ground fault is caused by a failure of the refractory lining or by other reasons. If the ground fault is caused by other reasons it is ascertained if it is caused by a defective magnetic yoke insulation. Furthermore, it can be ascertained which magnetic yoke of the induction furnace causes a ground fault. In this manner the induction furnace can be operated with improved security and smaller expense.

The invention relates to a device for removing slag from the surface of a melt from at least one induction melting furnace. The device has an arm, which can be rotated about a rotating point with a vertical axis of rotation, and, arranged at the end of the arm, a holder with a guide for a slide that can be moved up and down. On the slide there is a slag-removing device in the form of a gripper with gripping elements that can be opened and closed. The device is controlled by an operator, preferably semiautomatically, and can serve a number of induction melting furnaces arranged on a circular path.
The invention relates to a device for ground fault detection in multi-furnace installations with at least two induction furnaces and to a multi-furnace installation. Each induction furnace is associated with a ground fault monitoring means which is connected to the electrical supply line for the induction furnace coil. The device also comprises an output current detector. Futhermore, the device comprises an additional ground fault monitoring means that measures at the same position than the output current detector. In this way, the safety during the operation of the installation is improved.
The invention relates to a method and a device for identifying an earth fault in an induction furnace, as well as an induction furnace. When the presence of an earth fault has been determined with the aid of said earth fault identification device, said earth fault is located, and it is determined whether the fault is caused by a failure of the fire-resistant lining or is the result of other causes. If the earth fault has other causes, it is determined whether it has been caused by a faulty magnetic yoke insulation. It can also be determined which magnetic yoke of the induction furnace is causing an earth fault. This allows the induction furnace to be operated with improved safety and reduced overheads.
