Method for preparing panels made of a composite of cork and polyethylene
The present invention relates to a process for preparation of polyethylene-cork composite panels comprising the steps of: mixing 10-64% of cork granulate and 36-90% of polyethylene granulate at room temperature, and feeding a press with this mixture; compressing this mixture in the press with a compression force in the range of 300-450 kN, at a temperature in the range of 160-200° C. and for a hot compression time between 24-180 seconds; and cooling to room temperature, with a compression force between 350-450 kN, for a cold compression time between 32 and 240 seconds; to obtain panels with a thickness between 3 and 5 mm. Composites produced from cork, reinforced with natural or synthetic fibres are disclosed. The polymeric matrix can be made of natural, synthetic or recycled polymers. In order to control the mechanical properties of the resulting composites, binders may be added or applied functionalizing technologies for improving binding between fibres and/or cork and the polymeric matrix. The composites of the invention can be prepared using several melting-based processing techniques. The present invention discloses a process and device for expansion of cork material by subjecting the latter to saturated or overheated steam. The invention is able to expand cork from at least 5 to 30%, without use any foreign substances with respect to cork. The expansion device comprises three operative assemblies (UA, UA'; UE, UE'; UD, UD'), respectively, feeding assembly (UA, UA'), expansion assembly (UE, UE') and discharge assembly (UD, UD'), which are related with the expansion process stages of the cork material. This new process and device enables cork expansion in any type of cork material, such as falca cork, virgin or reproduction cork, cork planks, cork residues, grounded, granulated or powdered cork and combination thereof. The present invention refers to the processes for development of cork polymer composites (CPC) using synthetic, recycled or natural based polymers or blends of these with cork particles or cork waste from the industrial process, which can contain other elements, for example additives and/or compatibilizing agents and/or the raw materials being previously functionalized. The components are mixed in the solid form and further processed, for example in a twin-screw extruder, resulting in pellets that will be subject to a subsequent process, for example compression moulding, injection techniques, among others, in order to obtain materials with different properties comparing with current existent cork products, which could contain or not compatibilizing agents and/or other types of additives in order to facilitate the processing, promote better performance properties or give any additional characteristic.
Friedelin is a natural compound with promising proprieties. On its own or with chemical modification it is possible to introduce relevant biological activities, e. g., anti-cancer, anti-aging and agrochemical. Its availability in significant amounts has been a major drawback on its regular use and in the pursuit of different applications. Cork and cork-derived materials (e. g., black condensate) are the most relevant sources of Friedelin in nature (up to 10% in concentration). The present invention reports straightforward procedures to extract and purify Friedelin from cork and cork-derived materials (e. g., black condensate). It uses solvent extraction and (re)crystallization techniques easy to scale up to an industrial level, with a low solvent and low time consumption, high yields, up to 2.9%, and high purity degrees, up to 96%.
Cork and cork-derived materials (e.g. black condensate) can be used as raw materials in the extraction of valuable chemicals. The composition of these raw materials includes polyphenols and aliphatic alcohols. These structures (and particularly the aliphatic based) have potential to be used as the hydroxyl component in polymer synthesis (e.g. polyurethane or polyester) and is usually referred to as Polyol. This invention reports a straightforward Polyol solvent extraction procedure from cork and cork-derived materials (e.g. black condensate), composed of one to three stages depending on the target application. The final Polyol fraction can present a black or brown colour, having hydroxyl values between 307 to 131mg of KOH/g sample and an overall extraction yield ranging from 37 to 11%.

This invention describes a process of pre-expansion by submission to microwave radiation, capable of promoting cork expansion without using foreign substances to the cork system. The expansion achieved by this pre-expansion process shows values that can range between 40% and 85%. The expansion of cork by this pre-expansion process by submission to microwave radiation is achieved in any cork material independently of its shape, origin, quality or pre-treatments already performed, namely, falca cork, virgin or reproduction cork, cork planks, cork residues (resulting from stopper production or cork plank transformation), grinded cork, granulated cork or cork powder, any of them boiled or not boiled, resulting a new cork material with improved properties. The present invention also presents the modifications of the new cork material particularly through the volumetric increase after treatment.
