The plurality of receive beamlets are coherently combined into a first optical beam. A second optical beam is coherently divided into a plurality of transmit beamlets forming a transmitted beam. The plurality of receive beamlets are used to determine a direction of the received beam. Phases of the receive beamlets are adaptively adjusted to maximize intensity of the first optical beam. Phases of the transmit beamlets are adaptively adjusted to steer the transmitted beam in a direction opposite to the direction of the received beam.

Analyzing chirped waveforms in real time using photonic fractional Fourier transforms (FrFTs) is disclosed. Photonic signal processing, where mathematical operations are carried out by imprinting a signal onto a laser beam either temporally or spatially and propagating the signal through a series of optical elements that mimic the desired operation, can overcome the N2 log N computational limitations of FrFTs with current techniques. This enables real time analysis using currently available computing and electronics technologies.
Acquiring and illuminating a cooperative target with a laser beam from a remote source is disclosed. The process may be used for cooperative target tracking where the source/target are a ground station, an aircraft, UAV, drone, satellite, spacecraft, combinations thereof, etc. A laser beam can be rapidly and accurately pointed by an emitter source using a laser pointing system, such as a gimbal or other laser pointing device, for example. A differential GPS on the cooperative target detects its position and periodically sends this information either directly or indirectly to the laser emitter source. Monitoring self-discharge in operating battery cells (i.e., actively charging or discharging) is disclosed. Cell voltage data over time is used to detect cell-to-cell charge voltage imbalance in a battery while battery cells are at their peak charge voltage. Resistors across each cell are switched on or off according to the average charge voltage imbalance. Actual resistor on-times are used as input to train a neural network in real time. The neural network learns the resistor duty cycle needed by each battery cell to precisely balance its self-discharge losses. If the self-discharge changes, the neural network retrains itself as the new data arrives. The neural network may include a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network for each cell in the battery, which can learn the relative self-discharge rate of the respective cell.

Moisture is introduced in a controlled humidity atmosphere, distortion is monitored with an accurate laser interferometer (e.g., ˜1 nanometer (nm) accuracy), and measurements are correlated with moisture content change. Such processes decrease sample size by three orders of magnitude as compared with conventional techniques and have a smaller adhesive mass requirement, which enables measurement of expensive microelectronic adhesives that were previously cost-prohibitive to measure. Also, thinner films allow CME measurements of ultraviolet (UV) cured adhesives that would otherwise have depth of penetration issues. Furthermore, saturation occurs quickly, allowing pre-stabilization at room temperature, which enabled parametric studies as a function of processing or cure state. Additionally, testing occurs within hours versus months, enabling short lead times for root-cause investigations.
