A variety of AEDs and AED/cardiac monitor integrations are described. In some embodiments, the AED is configured to wirelessly receive incident notifications from a cardiac monitor indicating that the monitor has detected a cardiac arrest in a monitored patient. In response to reception of the incident notification, the AED generates an auditory and/or visual incident alert to inform nearby individuals of the potential cardiac arrest. The AED also sends a second incident notification to a remotely located server to inform the server of the incident. In another aspect, a kit that includes both an AED and a cardiac monitor is described. The kit is configured to facilitate sending incident notifications to the AED either directly or via one or more intermediate servers to cause the AED to generate the incident alert.

Systems and processes are described that facilitate notifying PSAPs and others of emergency uses of AEDs. An AED management server receives electronic messages from the AEDs during emergency use of such AED. The server determines whether an emergency services triggering event has occurred based on various factors. When a triggering event has occurred, an incident notification is sent that directly or indirectly causes a PSAP responsible for handling medical incidents in a region that includes the reporting AED to be notified of the emergency use. Factors included in determining whether an incident notification is to be sent may include factors such as the state of the AED, the perceived accuracy of a reported location of the AED, whether PSAP notifications are enabled, etc. In some embodiments contact notifications are also enabled and/or an AED administrator may set various preferences related to incident notification for their AEDs.

Shockable heart rhythm classifier for defibrillators
Neural network based heart rhythm classifiers are described. The neural network is configured to receive an electrocardiogram segment and to output an indication of whether the electrocardiogram segment represents a heart rhythm that is suitable for treatment by a defibrillation shock. Preferably, the received electrocardiogram segment is not transformed or processed prior to its reception by the neural network and no features of the electrocardiogram are identified to the neural network. In some embodiments, the received electrocardiogram segment is the sole input to the neural network. In various embodiments, the neural network is configured to classify electrocardiogram segments obtained while CPR was being performed on the patient. Classifiers that output a characteristic of CPR are also described. Such outputs may include an indication of whether CPR was being performed while the ECG was being detected, compression depth, etc. The described classifiers are well suited for use in defibrillators.

Status messages are wirelessly broadcast from medical devices (e.g., defibrillators) as advertisements that don't require the establishment of a wireless connection with listeners. The listeners are configured to act on, or forward received status messages as appropriate. The listeners may optionally include supplemental information supplied by the listener device when forwarding a status message to a management server. The listener may optionally analyze received status messages to determine whether an action should be taken based at least in part on status information in the message. Actions performed by the listener may include initiating a connection with the transmitting device to facilitate uploading new information from the defibrillator, updating the defibrillator's firmware, etc. Optionally, some of the advertisements are configured as beacons. A variety of methods, medical devices, responder network servers, emergency services interfaces and call center related processes are described that can help improve responder networks designed to get a medical device such as an automated external defibrillator and/or volunteer responders to the scene of a potential medical incident.
Several defibrillators, defibrillator architectures, defibrillator components and methods of operating defibrillators are described. In one aspect, a defibrillator (as for example an automated external defibrillator) that can be powered by a mobile communication device such as a smart cellular phone or a tablet computer is described. Utilizing a phone (or other mobile communication device) as the power supply for an external defibrillator allows the external defibrillator to be smaller and, in some circumstance, removes the need for a battery that stores sufficient energy for shock delivery—which would need to be checked and/or replaced on a regular basis. Additionally, when desired, certain control functionality, computation, data processing, and user instructions can be handled/presented by the mobile communications device thereby further simplifying the defibrillator design and improving the user experience. This architecture takes advantage of the nearly ubiquitous availability of smart phones, tablet computers and other mobile communication devices.
A variety of electrode pad cartridges are described that are suitable for use with a defibrillator. In one aspect the cartridge includes a housing and a tray that carries a pair of defibrillation electrode pads. At least a portion of the tray is slidably received within the cartridge housing such that the electrode pads are received within the housing. The tray is configured to be slidably pulled from the cartridge housing while the housing remains attached to the defibrillator to provide access to the electrode pads to facilitate use of the defibrillator.
A variety of electrode pad cartridges are described that are suitable for use with a defibrillator. In one aspect the cartridge includes a sealed tray. The tray takes the form of a drawer box having a foil secured thereto in order to seal the drawer chamber. In some embodiments, the foil is heat sealed to walls of the drawer box. The tray may include an exit feature such as a channel through which electrode pad wires coupled to the electrode pads pass. The pad tray may further include a seal that cooperates with the foil to seal the exit feature. In some embodiments, a thermoplastic resin is used as the filler material.
A variety of graphically responsive defibrillation electrode pads are described that can selectively display different images during use. The graphically responsive pads include a base electrode pad structure, at least two graphics, and one or more controllable layers that have multiple states. In some embodiments, the controllable layer incorporates an electrochromic material. In a first (opaque) state, the controllable layer hides the first graphic such that only the second graphic is visible to a user on the back side of the defibrillation electrode pad. When the controllable layer transitions to a second (transparent) state, the first graphic is made visible to thereby cause a composite image that combines the first and second graphics to be visible on the back side of the pad. In some embodiments, the electrochromic layer defaults to the opaque state when no power is applied to the electrochromic layer.

Shockable heart rhythm classifier for defibrillators
A variety of convolutional neural network based shockable heart rhythm classifiers are described. The neural network is configured to receive an electrocardiogram segment as an input and to generate an output indicative of whether the received electrocardiogram segment represents a heart rhythm that is suitable for treatment by a defibrillation shock. Preferably, the received electrocardiogram segment is not transformed or processed prior to its reception by the convolutional neural network and no features of the electrocardiogram are identified to the convolutional neural network. In some embodiments, the received electrocardiogram segment is the sole input to the convolutional neural network. The described classifier is well suited for use in defibrillators.

Defibrillators; Automated External Defibrillators; Defibrillation electrode pads; Defibrillation accessories, namely, a communications unit to facilitate communication with a server, chargers, display unit for use in conjunction with the defibrillator; Electrode pads for medical use; Medical apparatus and instruments, namely, electrocardiogram sensing apparatus, cardiac rhythm classifiers, cardiac diagnostics equipment and cardiac therapy equipment to improve cardiac performance
Several defibrillators, defibrillator architectures, defibrillator components and methods of operating defibrillators are described. In one aspect, a defibrillator (as for example an automated external defibrillator) that can be powered by a mobile communication device such as a smart cellular phone or a tablet computer is described. Utilizing a phone (or other mobile communication device) as the power supply for an external defibrillator allows the external defibrillator to be smaller and, in some circumstance, removes the need for a battery that stores sufficient energy for shock delivery - which would need to be checked and/or replaced on a regular basis.
