ARTIFICIAL CARBOHYDRATE RECEPTORS AND METHODS OF USE THEREOF
Artificial (e.g., synthetic) carbohydrate receptors that specifically bind sialic acid and cancer cell surface carbohydrate antigens containing terminal sialic moieties (e.g., Lewis oligosacharide antigens) and methods of use were developed. The artificial carbohydrate receptors and methods can be used to detect and identify biologically important carbohydrates, selectively label cancer cells, to modulate cancer cell growth, and to modulate inflammation. Because the artificial carbohydrate receptors demonstrate a strong affinity for sialylated Lewis oligosacharide antigens (e.g., sialyl Lewis x (sLex) and sialyl Lewis a (sLea)) which are overexpressed on tumor cells during the onset and progression of cancer, and are overexpressed on the endothelium of chronically inflamed tissues, the artificial carbohydrate receptors described herein can find use as cancer diagnostic and therapeutic agents.

A method of measuring the susceptibility of a subject to calcifying nanoparticle formation is disclosed. The method can include obtaining a cell culture comprising peripheral blood mononuclear cells, immune cells, or both, from a peripheral blood mononuclear fraction of a subject in a complete culture media; extracting a first aliquot and a second aliquot from the cell culture; and dispensing the first and second aliquot in different wells. The surface of the well containing the first aliquot can include a calcifying nanoparticle biofilm, while the well containing the second aliquot does not. The first and second aliquots can be incubated and the concentration of osteopontin in each aliquot determined. An osteopontin factor can be calculated and compared to osteopontin factors from a representative sample of other subjects. The osteopontin factor can be defined as the osteopontin concentration in the first aliquot divided by the osteopontin concentration in the second aliquot.

Compositions and methods for protecting neural tissue (e.g., neurons) from anoxia and spreading depression (SD) involve inhibiting the cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG) pathway. It was discovered that the PKG pathway plays a crucial role in regulating SD and tolerance to anoxia in the central nervous system (CNS). Inhibition of the PKG pathway greatly reduces SD and increases tolerance to anoxia (i.e., hypoxia), while activation of the pathway exacerbates SD pathology. The compositions and methods can be used to treat any condition associated with SD or anoxia, including stroke, spinal cord injury, neurogenerative disease, dizziness, headaches, and migraines.

Manzamine compounds have been discovered to decrease cell dissociation and cell migration associated with the metastatic potential of cancer cells and a restoration of cancer cell susceptibility to agents, such as TRAIL, which can induce apoptosis. Specifically, Manzamine A has a formerly unrecognized utility in both blocking tumor cell invasion and tumor metastasis as well in restoring cancer cell susceptibility to standard chemotherapeutic agents which induce apoptosis and, therefore, has utility in treating cancer.

A METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MULTI-VIEW VIDEO CODING
A method of multi-view video coding is provided. The method includes generating a multiple-view compressed encoded data sequence, sequence being generated by encoding a plurality of video signals. Each video signal defines a distinct camera view of one of a plurality of cameras. The encoding is based on a hypercube prediction structure formed by multiple nodes that each node represent a distinct camera view. The method also includes conveying the compressed encoded data sequence over a data communication network connection, and presenting a visual display. The visual display is presented by decoding the compressed encoded data sequence, the decoding being based upon the hypercube prediction structure.
A new family Here we report a new family of four-cystine/three-loop conotoxins (designated framework 14). Three peptides of this family (flfl4a-c) were isolated from the venom of Conus floridanus floridensis and one (vill4a) from the venom of Conus villepinii, two worm-hunting Western Atlantic cone snail species. CD spectra and nanoNMR spectroscopy of these conotoxins directly isolated from the cone snails revealed a highly helical secondary structure for the four conotoxins. Sequence-specific nanoNMR analysis at room temperature revealed a well-defined helix-loop-helix tertiary structure that resembles that of the Cs &agr;/&agr; scorpion toxins κ-hefutoxin, K-KTx1.3 and Om-toxins, which adopt a stable three-dimensional fold where the two &agr;-helices are linked by the two disulfide bridges. One of these conotoxins (vill4a) has a Lys/Tyr (or Phe) diad, separated by approximately 6Å, which is a conserved structural feature in K+ channel blockers.

TREATMENT OR PREVENTION OF CANCER AND PRECANCEROUS DISORDERS
The NSAID, sulindac and/or its metabolites and derivatives, in combination with hydrogen peroxide or another oxidizing agent, such as arsenic trioxide that generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), significantly enhances the killing of cancer cells. This effect occurs at concentrations of each compound that individually have little or no activity directed against cancer cells. A skin cream has been developed and used to treat skin cancer and precancerous skin growths that effectively removes the lesions with no effect on surrounding normal skin.
