A module (10) of a floating structure such as a pontoon assembly comprises a body defining an upper surface or deck (12) and at least one closed chamber defined below the upper surface for providing buoyancy. At least one partly open cavity (24) is defined in the underside of the body of the module (10) beneath the deck. The cavity has a top and side walls but is open at its base, facing the water surface in use. At least one passage (36) is defined in the upper surface extending to the top of the cavity. The passage includes a one way valve (37) allowing passage of air from the cavity to the deck. In use, the pontoon (10) is optionally filled or part filled with ballast and placed on a body of water. Next, some of the air from the one or more of the cavities is evacuated to reduce the pressure in the cavities and lower the pontoon into the water. Multiple modules can be interconnected together to form a relatively rigid larger structure/pontoon assembly.
