An oriented magnetic core lamination technique and a method of producing circular lamination cores. The method includes cutting rectangular strips with teeth pointing in a single direction (may not be the traverse or rolling direction) from the steel sheet plane, as opposed to directly punching circular laminates from the steel sheet with the teeth pointing in all directions. The strips are cut in such a way that the short side is aligned to the direction that has the best magnetic properties. The strips can then be bent into a donut or toroidal shape, either inwardly (with teeth pointing to the circle center) or outwardly (with teeth pointing out of the center) depending on the design of the lamination core. The direction with the best magnetic properties may be determined by non-destructive methods such as magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) analysis, x-ray diffraction (XRD), or electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD).

The invention involves using composite panels to a framework to create a standard reusable rapidly deployable building structure, even in remote areas under favourable weather conditions. The invention discloses a minimal set of components, assemblies and methods where logistics are simplified through the use of flat-pack shipping and minimal use of field fasteners/tools. No crane or specialized trades are required to construct the building on site. Standardization allows for interchangeability of components for repair or changing of building dimensions either during the initial construction or later. Most components are commercially available materials joined into assemblies using simplified manufacturing operations to reduce costs. Most assemblies, including flanges and cleats connecting adjacent composite panels, rectangular and/or triangular lattice (truss), transom, pier, columns, shear pins with retention means, are re-usable should the building require repairs, re-purposing or relocation. A free-span interior is described maximizing flexibility for arrangement of interior rooms and furnishings.

Abrégé
A direct reduction process for the production of ferrochrome from chromite ore or concentrate is disclosed. According to the present invention, calcium chloride (CaCl2) is added as a catalyst to accelerate the solid reduction and enhance the particle growth of the metallic phase (i.e. ferrochrome) during reduction. The reduction of chromite ore or concentrate takes place at much lower temperatures (e.g. 1200 to 1400 °C) compared to the conventional smelting technologies, and the ferrochrome particles formed are segregated from the unwanted residual gangue and spinel particles, facilitating their subsequent physical separation.

A combustion system for operational connection to an energy conversion system and a method of providing thermal energy to the energy conversion system. The system comprises a combustor to be oxy-fired at above atmospheric pressure, using solid, liquid or gaseous fuels, with a supply of oxygen and supercritical carbon dioxide. The combustion gases from the combustor are delivered to a heat exchanger which interfaces with the energy conversion system. Temperatures in the combustor, and the delivery temperature to the heat exchanger, are controlled by selective recirculation of at least part of the combustion gases to the combustor, and by modulating the supply of oxygen and fuel to the combustor. Any combustion gases which are not recirculated are processed to separate carbon dioxide for use or sequestration. The system and method substantially eliminate emissions of carbon dioxide, while providing a highly efficient supply of thermal energy to the energy conversion system.

The present invention provides application of perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) onto metallic substrates to form a pinhole-free protective layer by means of electrostatic powder coating, by adding highly thermally conductive fillers such as graphite or ceramic powders/fibers/whiskers/flakes into virgin PFA powder to improve the thermal conductivity, as well as the application of the filled PFA powder onto various metallic substrates, including convoluted or finned tubes, outer or inner surfaces. Using a simple powder coating technique, a pinhole-free protective layer thinner than a PTFE covering film and with much higher thermal conductivity is produced on the metallic tubes and a physical bond is created at the interface between the PFA and the tube. These make the overall heat transfer coefficient much higher than a PTFE covered tube, which must have a thicker PTFE film to avoid pinhole and is lack of physical bond at the interface.

A reusable sorbent, and method of use, for carbon dioxide capture and purification. The sorbent comprises pelletized composites for use in a fluidized bed process, each pellet comprising calcium oxide; an aluminate binder; and at least one transition metal component. The aluminate binder is preferably calcium aluminate or bauxite, and the transition metal is preferably selected from copper, manganese and cobalt. For carbon dioxide capture, the transition metal is an oxide, which has an exothermic reduction reaction. For removal of oxygen from carbon dioxide, the transition metal in the pellets is non-oxidized. Reduction of the oxygen carrier can be performed by providing a flow of fuel gas, such as methane. The pelletized composites provide for improved carbon dioxide capture and longer use of the sorbents with significant mitigation of decay, and without the disadvantages of oxy-firing.

This enzyme process is done at reduced temperatures (40-60°C) and pressures requiring less energy.

A method of introducing oxygen into a boiler system for combustion with a prepared fuel in a furnace combustion chamber comprises providing a plurality of swirl-inducing elements to the air stream delivery lines, and a plurality of oxygen delivery jets adjacent the intake region and substantially surrounding the air stream delivery lines; igniting the fuel gas to create a flame; and delivering a stream of oxygen through the jets tangentially to the flame envelope to substantially shape and stabilize a swirling flow field for the flame, the oxygen concentration in the flame envelope gradually increasing towards an outer periphery of the flame envelope. A boiler system for using the method can be a new system or a retrofit to an existing system. The method and system provide advantages in reduced environmental impact and increased efficiency while addressing the safety factors involved in introducing oxygen to boiler systems.

The present invention relates to a method of processing Global Positioning System (GPS) carrier phase and pseudorange information. Dual-frequency carrier phase and pseudorange measurements from GPS receivers are processed by specifying separate oscillator parameters for the carrier phase and pseudorange measurements. Carrier phase estimates of errors of the oscillator are arbitrarily biased with respect to the pseudorange estimates, and ambiguity parameters are constrained to be integer-valued. Isolating the ambiguities as integer valued parameters provides extra information that can be exploited to maximize the use of GPS and other Global Navigation Satellite Systems.

Abrégé
A method and apparatus for direct contact steam generation for a variety of industrial processes including heavy oil recovery, power generation and pulp and paper applications. The steam generation system consists of a combustor (10) and a steam generator (70) and is constructed to be operable at elevated pressures. The fuel, at least one oxidant and a fluid supply including water are supplied at pressure to the combustor. Flue gas from the combustor (10) is delivered to the direct contact steam generator (70) at pressure, and upon direct contact with water, produces a flue gas stream consisting primarily of steam. This product stream can then be cleansed and used for industrial applications. The combustor (10) can be operated with low grade fuel and low quality water with high solids and hydrocarbon contents. The apparatus and method reduce the environmental footprint by reducing air emission, concentrating CO2 to enable capture and reducing clean water requirements. The removal of solids from the combustor (10) at its second end (62) as well as at the second end of the steam generator (70) as at (78), the use of water injection-type steam quality control and a steam feedback inlet (46) to the combustor (10) from the steam generator (70) enhance the efficiency of the apparatus.
