The method comprises the steps of: - generating (201), by a first electronic control unit (5), a plurality of unique graphic representation identification codes (7), e.g., Data Matrix codes, identifying a panel body portion to be machined; - printing (202) such Data Matrix codes on an outer surface of the panel body; each new Data Matrix code is printed on the panel body portion to be machined, identified thereby after the panel body has been moved by a predetermined distance, so that the new identification code (7) and the previously printed identification code are separated from each other by said predetermined distance; - detecting (203), in succession, the Data Matrix codes printed on the outer surface of the panel body to be machined, when such panel body portions pass through the at least one machining unit (102, 103, 104); - acquiring (204) information of machining operations carried out on the panel body portion identified by the detected Data Matrix code; - associating (205) said acquired machining information with the detected Data Matrix code; - sending (206) said acquired machining information and the Data Matrix code associated therewith, to a main processing unit (20) connected with the at least one electronic control unit (2, 3, 4) to be stored in a memory (21).
