Abrégé

A piston ring (6) which is arranged with radial and axial play in an associated piston ring groove (5) in a piston (1) of a reciprocating internal combustion engine can be stabilized to prevent tilting on and contact with the radially outer edge of the piston ring groove (5) by the cross section of the piston ring (6) and/or the piston ring groove (5) being designed in such a manner that a gap is formed between the lower side of the piston ring (6) and the lower supporting surface of the associated piston ring groove (5), said gap opening vertically radially outwards in the radial direction and, when the piston ring (6) is not subjected to a load, remaining open to the outside irrespective of the temperature of the piston (1) for as long as the piston ring (6) is not loaded by pressure on the top side. The effect achieved by this is that, when a piston (1) is deformed under the action of heat during operation, the initial contact between the lower side of the piston ring (6) and the opposite, lower supporting surface of the piston ring groove (5) begins at least in a region of the lower side of the piston ring (6), which region faces the piston axis, and rubbing of the piston ring (6) on the radially outer edge of the piston ring groove (5) is prevented.

Abrégé

A large two-stroke turbocharged diesel engine of the crosshead type provided with an exhaust gas recirculation system and with a fuel injection system that can, selectively add water to the fuel flow to thereby increase the mass flow through the injection nozzles under particular operating conditions, e.g. at high exhaust gas recirculation rates. The increased mass flow through the injection nozzles improves the entrainment of the fresh charge into the high-speed of the fuel spray and thereby increases the fuel/air mixing and brings the combustion towards the lean side and hence counteracts soot formation.

Abrégé

For reducing the Nox-emission of a large sized two stroke diesel engine having at least one combustion room (3), a reciprocating piston (4) and an exhaust opening (12) controlled by an exhaust valve (13) at each work cyclus a small volume of burnt gas is retained in the combustion room (3) and so added to the fresh air for the next combustion. For achieving this retention of burnt gas the underside of the valve disc (15) off the exhaust valve (13) is provided with a shallow concave face (17) building a basin-like collection room, whose depth is within a range of 2-10 % of the outer diameter of the valve disc (15).

Abrégé

A fuel injector for an internal combustion engine comprises at least a housing, a valve seat (21), a valve spindle (16), an atomizer (5), and a cut-off element (27). The atomizer has a central bore (22) from which a plurality of nozzle bores (31) extend through a sidewall of the atomizer. The cut-off element is carried by a shaft on the valve spindle and comprises a first cylindrical section (28) located in the central bore of the atomizer to close fuel access to inlet openings of a first group of nozzle bores, when the valve spindle is in the closed position. When the valve spindle is in the open position, fuel is supplied to at least a second group of nozzle bores through a passage between the circumference of the cut-off element and the central bore of the atomizer. The cut-off element has a second cylindrical section (29) for closing off inlet openings of the second group of nozzle bores when the valve spindle is in the closed position.
