Abrégé

There is provided an apparatus for producing activated biochar from an input biomass, the apparatus comprising a metal retort and a metal ceramic retort, each retort being surrounded by a chamber and connected to a biochar activation device. The biomass is introduced into a metal retort and metal ceramic retort, and heated to an average temperature of 300° C. Light-hydrocarbon gasses are extracted from the biomass and collected in the surrounding chamber where they are burned, providing for an automatic carbonization process. The temperature of the exhaust gases in the chamber surrounding the retorts reaches a temperature above 850° C. After the biochar is roasted, it is carried to a biochar activation chamber where it is exposed to the hot exhaust gasses which rapidly heat the biochar and produce activated biochar suitable for a variety of uses. Methods of processing biomass into activated biochar with desirable characteristics are also described.
