Web lifter and/or stabilizer and method of lifting and/or stabilizing a travelling web and coating a web. The device creates a web hold down force via a negative pressure slot at its exit side, which draws the web down against the surface on the entry side. The device can be actuated to move the web relative to slot die coater off the die lips and stop the application of slurry to the web, thereby creating uncoated regions on the web surface. The device can be actuated to move the web back into contact with the coater to start the application of slurry to the web, creating coated regions on the web surface. Web lifting can be accomplished by rotating the device in first and second directions to lift the web off of the slot die coater and return the web back into contact with the coater.

An improved system for applying a coating to a sheet is disclosed. The system allows precise control of the actuation of the valves and movement of the nozzle to create a plurality of coating profiles. The system includes a controller, which is used to actuate the valves to begin and terminate the flow of material onto the sheet through a nozzle. In addition, the controller may move the nozzle from its operative position to an inoperative position away from the sheet. In some embodiments, a fluid displacement mechanism is used. The controller is also able to coat the opposite side of the sheet. Registration of the coating can be programmed to be in exact alignment, or advanced or delayed by a specific amount.

Apparatus and methods particularly suited for drying tissue grade paper. In certain embodiments, a wet web, such as a web exiting a tissue manufacturing machine, is transferred to an air floatation dryer with specially arranged air bars and impingement nozzles described herein where the wet web is dried while still at least partly supported by an air-permeable belt. In certain embodiments, the specially arranged air floatation dryer comprises one or more air floatation dryer units through which the wet web is conveyed by way of a supporting endless loop or belt of air-permeable construction. The air bars and opposing impingement nozzles are so arranged as to force the web into contact with the belt and then subsequently lift the web from the belt surface in a repetitive and alternating fashion as the web and belt travel through the dryer.
Method of extracting syngas between the zone in a furnace where oxygen-starved combustion of biomass occurs and the zone in the furnace where secondary air is added to complete combustion, conditioning and cleaning the extracted syngas, and delivering it in a metered amount to the oxidizer or upstream of the oxidizer to reduce or eliminate the need for additional fossil fuels once the oxidizer has achieved its operating temperature. The gasifier or furnace burns solid waste and produces a syngas containing relatively high levels of CO, which is extracted from the furnace, conditioned, and introduced into an RTO as a fuel source. In certain embodiments, no extraction of syngas from the furnace takes place; the furnace conditions are manipulated so that normally undesirable levels of CO and other VOC's remain in the process stream. The heat from the furnace is used as intended (e.g., to heat a dryer), the stream is conditioned, and ultimately proceeds to a downstream RTO. Since the gas stream remains rich in CO and VOC's, its fuel value in the RTO is substantially higher than otherwise would be the case.
Infrared air float bar for use in floating and drying a continuous planar web of a material in a dryer. Direct radiated or reflected infrared electromagnetic energy from an infrared light source in a removable channel assembly accelerates drying, or evaporation of solvents, or curing of web material passing in proximity to the bar, either by infrared electromagnetic energy, or in combination with convention airflow. The infrared source is cooled by pressurized air passing through an interior portion of the removable air bar channel assembly, and the air is further conducted into fluid contact with the web in an air gap between the emitter and web to promote convective heat transfer and to contribute to the air pressure field supporting web flotation. The removable channel assembly is configured for replacement of the infrared emitter and to allow the setting of the pressurized cooling air flow to the optimum level.

A valve lift mechanism for actuating a valve in the vertical direction, and a regenerative thermal oxidizer including the valve and lift mechanism is disclosed. The valve is allowed to move vertically and oscillating rotary motion is possible. Vertical movement is achieved using the valve lift mechanism without the use of compressed air. In certain embodiments, the valve lift mechanism includes a torque motor. Preferably, a screw jack is used to adjust the vertical height of the valve. Vertical movement can reduce the torque needed to rotate the valve, and also facilitates servicing of the valve. For example, if the valve experiences high temperature, and consequently expands, rotating the valve against the mating seal plate can be difficult, if not impossible. By lowering the valve slightly, the frictional forces between the valve and the mating seal plate are reduced, allowing freer rotational movement of the valve.

Web stabilizer particularly for one-sided flotation of a running web. The device includes two discharge slots which allow for increased draw down force, which flattens machine direction wrinkles in a floating web. There is a primary discharge slot and a second discharge slot spaced from and stepped down from the primary discharge slot, a first web support surface between the primary discharge slot and the secondary discharge slot, and a second web support surface downstream of the secondary discharge slot in the direction of web travel. An integral blower provides a supply of air that is uniformly distributed to the primary and secondary slots. Air discharged from the primary slot is gathered into the air stream of the secondary slot and creates an increased air cushion to provide greater support to the web and thereby remove machine direction web wrinkles caused by higher tension in light weight webs.
Apparatus and method for applying a water-based emulsion of silicone fluid to a printed web required to be cooled, such that evaporative cooling of the web is promoted in addition to coating of said web with a silicone material. Water evaporated following the application of the silicone fluid to the web is recovered by condensation on the applicator (s) and reapplied to the web, thus economizing the amount of silicone fluid mixture necessary to provide both cooling and enhanced slip characteristics necessary for further handling and processing of the web. The condensation step is effected by containing the evaporated water from the web within a compact enclosure enveloping both the applicator (s) and the web, and optionally chilling said applicator (s) with a cooling medium, preferably water, by means of said cooling medium flowing through at least one of the applicators. In certain embodiments, in addition to condensing the evaporated water, the airborne silicone mist created in the coating step is captured and is returned to the fluid applicator.
