A conveyor (16) is arranged to collect substrate falling through the loading port (15c) and transport it to a dispensing point (18) where the substrate is dispensed onto a crop. A control unit (34) receives signals representative of a speed of the conveyor (16) and/or a speed of the apparatus (2) relative to a crop, and uses the signals to control the speed of the conveyor (16).
