A sample containing cells collected from a patient is irradiated with electromagnetic waves, an electromagnetic wave scattering spectrum from the cells in the sample is measured, and normal cells and abnormal cells are discriminated on the basis of the characteristics of the electromagnetic wave scattering spectrum.
