Abrégé

The invention relates to a process for making e-Beam curable pressure sensitive adhesive compositions by derivatizing an acrylic polymer having one or more hydroxy groups or one or more acid groups with a derivatizing agent prepared from a hydroxy-functional acrylate monomer and a diisocyanate. The pressure sensitive adhesive can be effectively cured without a photoinitiator or reactive diluent. Also disclosed are e-Beam curable pressure sensitive adhesives made with the derivatizing agent and methods for adhering substrates with the pressure sensitive adhesive compositions.

Abrégé

The invention relates to a composition for making flooring material comprising resin and particles comprising ammonium quaternary salt. The resin is generally an unsaturated polyester resin. The flooring materials, or engineered stone slabs from which the flooring materials or other material can be formed, are generally made from combining the resin, particles, inorganic particulate material and an initiator and allowing the resin to cure. The flooring material composition may be cobalt free. Metal catalysts may be used to cure the resin.

Abrégé

A gear or engine oil or other type of lubricant, which effectively reduces churning losses in a dip lubrication system or any lubrication system where churning loss occur has a surface tension less than 28 mN/m and viscosity less than 400 mPa-sec at 25 °C (about 500 cSt at 25 °C). Formulations include Group l-IV base oil, in combination with an amount of silicone oil effective to decrease the surface tension of the oil, thereby reducing churning losses. When the base oil is prominently Group III, the coefficient of friction of the gear oil is also reduced.

Abrégé

Energy loss in a dip lubrication system (34) is reduced by reducing the immersion depth of the gear (30) within a pool of oil (32). This can be accomplished by increasing the pressure within the dip lubrication system (34) which effectively reduces the flow rate of the oil so that the oil remains separated from the oil pool (34) for a longer period of time thereby reducing the oil level and the immersion depth of the gear (32) within the oil pool (32). Alternately, this can be accomplished by substituting a higher density gas for air which has the same effect. In a third embodiment the immersed gear (60) includes wind vanes (62, 64) that direct air against the oil pool (68) creating a trough (72) which effectively reduces the immersion depth of the gear (60) within the oil pool (68).

Abrégé

A super hydrophobic self-cleaning coating composition composed of from 0.001 to 5% by weight of hydrophobic fumed silicas coated in 95% to 99.999% by weight of a solvent, preferably acetone, to form a super hydrophobic coating for forming an almost clear, translucent dirt repellant film on a painted material, plastic, metal, glass, ceramic, fiberglass, wood, waxed or polymer substrate. The treated fumed silica in a solvent forms a film having a contact angle of at least 165 degrees as compared to water having a contact angle of from 50 to 60 degrees on a noncoated surface. The composition imparts a degree of hydrophobicity to the surface so that the surface has a tilt angle of sliding of less than 2 degrees as compared to water on a noncoated surface having a tilt angle of sliding of 90 degrees or higher.

Abrégé

Adhesive composition derived from tannin-furfuryl alcohol catalyzed by acid in a two-part aqueous system is used to bond a variety of wood substrates to give good bond strength and high percentage of wood failure. The reactivity of the mixed adhesive can be controlled by the proper selection of acid catalyst, catalyst concentration, and adhesive composition. This gives adhesive with a wide range of open time during processing. This adhesive system can be either cold set or heat activated. It can also be cured by radio frequency similar to typical industrial settings. These characteristics make this adhesive system suitable for a number of engineered wood applications such as finger joint, Glulam, l-joist, and LVL.

Abrégé

A hydrophobic self cleaning coating composition that can be applied by conventional methods such as by spraying the composition onto a surface forming creating a wet and dry dirt repellent coating on the surface. The coating utilizes hydrophobic nanoparticles of fumed silica and/or titania in a solvent which evaporates at ambient temperature. The coating solves the problem of poor resistance to UV light, opaque appearance, and/or abrasion found in previous coatings of similar nature. Virtually transparent coating are produced as compared to conventional coatings of comparable hydrophobicity which are typically white or opaque. The coating can be applied by a single and easy spraying method and the super hydrophobic property can be achieved by drying the film by evaporation of the solvent at ambient temperature for 5 to 10 minutes. Embodiments of the hydrophobic self-cleaning coating composition can be produced resulting in a clear coating or in some cases a translucent dirt repellant film or coating on painted material, plastic, metal, glass, ceramic, fiberglass or a polymer substrate. One preferred coating composition utilizing an effective amount of a treated fumed silica in a solvent forms a coated surface providing a contact angle of at least 165 degrees as compared to water having a contact angle of from 10 to 15 degrees on a noncoated surface. The self-cleaning coating composition imparts a degree of hydrophobicity to a surface so that the treated surface will have a tilt angle of sliding of less than 2 degrees as compared to water on a noncoated surface having a tilt angle of sliding of 90 degrees or higher.

Abrégé

The present invention relates to a novel use of nanomaterials as a viscosity modifier and thermal conductivity improver for gear oil and other lubricating oil compositions. The gear oils of the instant invention have a higher viscosity index, higher shear stability, and improved thermal conductivity compared to currently available gear oils. The preferred nanoparticles also impart a reduction in the coefficient of friction, including reduced friction in the boundary lubrication regime. These properties are obtained by replacing part or all of the polymer thickener or viscosity index improver or some other part of the composition normally used in gear oils with nanomaterials of suitable shape, size, and composition.

Abrégé

A water based spray wax composition containing a microemulsion of a cationic wax nanoparticles, a quaternary silicone compound and zinc oxide nanoparticles providing long lasting protection of paint, glass, and metal, plastic, rubber, or elastomeric trim surfaces. The use of microemulsions or nanometer sized particles in the primary ingredients provides a transparent spray wax composition, which provides excellent coverage due to a significantly larger surface area, due to the nanoparticles used in the formulation. It also enables the wax particles to penetrate and fill small cracks and crevices for improved appearance, and durability of the spray wax properties. Because of their small size, nanometer sized particles do not reflect light which passes though the coating without any, or a minimal, amount of reflection resulting in a visual appearance of the liquid being transparent and eliminating hazing, streaking, and swirl marks associated with conventional spray wax products utilizing ingredients composed of conventional sized particles.

The present invention utilizes simple dimethylsilicone fluids of the proper viscosity/molecular weight added to modify the low temperature properties of polycyclic hydrocarbons. One preferred embodiment of a polycyclic hydrocarbon is a perhydro dimer of alpha- methyl styrene. Addition of the dimethylsilicone fluid to the perhydo dimer of alpha-methyl styrene improves the low temperature performance without degrading the requisite low shear stress shear strength properties. Low viscosity dimethylsilicone lubricating fluids combined with polycyclic hydrocarbons are suitable for use in infinitely variable transmissions providing good Io w temperature flow properties and high shear strength at high temperature and low contact stress conditions.

Abrégé

Novel methods for monitoring and recording fouling of aqueous systems are disclosed. The methods employ a heat transfer test assembly including an outer tube member, a heating rod positioned within the outer tube member, a ribbed tube sleeve fitted over the heating rod and thermocouples for sensing the wall temperature of heating rod. The heat transfer test assembly is connected to a monitoring and recording assembly that is connected to or includes a piping assembly. The piping assembly and the heat transfer test assembly are placed in fluid communication with a heat exchanger. Fouling determinations of fluid flowing through the piping assembly are made at varying flow rates with simultaneous monitoring and recording of the flow rates together with data, such as corrosion, pH, conductivity, and the like.
