Abstract

The invention provides a system configured to adjust a jaw gripping force of a pulling head. A locking nut is threadedly attached to the pulling head and defines an aperture which extends therethrough. A frame adaptor is at least partially positioned within the aperture of the locking nut. The frame adaptor further receives a portion of the pulling head and a piston of a power tool within an aperture thereof, with the portion and the piston engaging one another within the aperture of the frame adaptor. The portion of the pulling head is operatively associated with a jaw of the pulling head. An adjustment nut is threadedly attached to the frame adaptor. Rotation of the adjustment nut, with the locking nut in an unlocked position, causes the jaw gripping force of the pulling head to either be strengthened or weakened, depending on the direction of rotation.

Abstract

A tool for setting blind fasteners is disclosed. A stem of a fastener is engaged by a pulling head and its sleeve is also engaged by the pulling head. In an initial stage, a pump piston compresses fluid in a hydraulic pump, affecting movement of a drawbar and piston in relation to a stationary adaptor connected to the tool, pulling the stem in relation to the sleeve at a fast rate per pump. As the pulling force increases, pressure in the pump triggers a logic system to shift the tool into a high pressure mode, decreasing the effort to complete fastener installation. The logic system resets after each squeeze of the lever, minimizing the number of pumps necessary to complete the installation while keeping effort at a comfortable level. An adjustable pressure relief valve allows the fluid to return to the reservoir chamber, returning the tool to its initial condition.

Abstract

A rivetless nut plate assembly (20), which is fully preassembled, which can be installed into an aperture (1 12) of a composite material workpiece (110), such as a carbon fiber structure, without risking delamination of the workpiece. The rivetless nut plate assembly (20) includes a nut (22), a holding bracket (24), a retainer (28), and a sleeve member (25, 25a, 25b, 25c). Additionally, a stem (26) is used to install the rivetless nut plate assembly (20). The sleeve member (25, 25a, 25b, 25c) is configured such that the nut plate assembly (20) can be installed in a composite material workpiece (110) without risking delamination. The sleeve member (25, 25a, 25b, 25c) may be formed of 45Cb-55Ti Titanium Columbium, as Titanium Colurnbium is a high strength and ductile material that resists corrosion in the presence of, for example, a carbon fiber composite structure (110). Monel, Titanium alloys, and other soft Nickel alloys are also good material selections for the sleeve (25, 25a, 25b, 25c), for similar reasons. Non-metallic materials with high tensile and shear strengths, such as Torlon or Parmax, would provide the desired corrosion protection and also offer a potential weight savings.

Abstract

A repair/replacement nut plate assembly (133), which is fully preassembled, is provided which can be inserted into an oversized or reworked/reconditioned aperture (131, 131a) of a workpiece (110) after an original nut plate has been removed from the original aperture of the workpiece. The repair/replacement nut plate assembly (133) includes a nut (22), a holding bracket (24), a stem (26), a nut retainer (28), and a sleeve member (132). The sleeve member (132) is configured to be secured to a nut plate assembly (20), of the same type originally used to provide the original nut plate in the original aperture of the workpiece to compensate for material lost from the workpiece during the removal of the original nut plate. The sleeve member (132) allows for the original nut plate assembly (20) to be utilized, with only the securement of the sleeve member (132) to the holding bracket (24) prior to setting.

Abstract

A pulling head that can be used with a wide range of fasteners and power tools having different stroke lengths and/or power ratings. The pulling head has a set of internal jaws which has serrations that are configured to grip a wide range of fastener types and sizes. The effective stroke of the pulling head is determined by the power tool to which it is engaged, rather than by the structure and design of the pulling head. The pulling head preferably has two jaws and a jaw follower with a leading surface which provides two beveled surfaces. As a result, the trailing surface of the jaws need not be conical, thereby providing that the jaws need not be machined after they are cast, thereby providing a very low cost manufacturing solution.
