Abstract

A novel structural arrangement for the various components of an Ultra-Micro Gas Turbine Generator, based on a single part impeller element which comprises the compressor, the turbine and the electrical generator core in a single annular structure, produced as a single piece by an additive manufacturing process. The single annular structure has a hollow shell structure, with a supporting structure within in. The internal hollow space of the shell structure provides for a flow of cooling air from the outside through the internal space, for cooling the turbine region of the impeller. This air flow could be assisted by the use of internal blades, which can also serve as the supporting structure to increase the strength of the shell structure. The air flow can either be ejected at the center of the turbine, or can provide a high pressure supply for air bearings of the impeller element.

Abstract

in vivo in vivo functional imaging of the human ear and measurement of nanometer scale motion of the tympanic membrane under various acoustic excitations, and identification of vibration patterns that vary between human subjects in response to sound. By combining spectrally encoded imaging with phase-sensitive spectral-domain interferometry, high-resolution imaging of the membrane surface is obtained within a fraction of a second, through a handheld imaging probe. The detailed physiological data obtained allows measuring a wide range of clinically relevant parameters for patient diagnosis, and provides a new tool for studying middle and inner ear physiology. Use of a line measurement technique, without mechanically scanning the probe beam, enables characteristics of the membrane vibration to be measured, in a time scale of tenths of a second, thereby reducing the possibility of inaccuracy because of movements of the hand-held instrument.

Abstract

An airfoil surface skin, comprising a network of a solid material, embedded in a base of deformable solid material. Fluid pressure applied to the interface between the network and the surrounding embedding material, opens an internal network of channels by viscous peeling of the surrounding solid from the network. The network is offset from the centerline the surround material, such that pressure driven viscous flow through the narrow channels generates two types of deformation of the skin—an in-plane elongation and a curvature of the skin plane itself. The shape of the internal solid core element and its material, and the material of the encompassing solid are chosen to achieve a desired integral structural rigidity. The injected fluid pressure determines the extent of extension and bending. Use of this skin enables shape amending airfoils having reduced drag compared with similar airfoils having conventional flap mechanisms.

Abstract

A molecular data storage system is presented for encoding data-block(s). The system includes one or more populations of molecular sequences, each population encoding a respective one of the data-blocks. Each molecular sequence comprises a data encoding section comprising a sequence of similar predetermined length N of short k-mers, whereby in each population the data encoding sections of all molecular sequences have the similar predetermined length N. The short k-mers serve as data encoding building blocks of the data encoding sections, whereby valid short k-mers serving as data encoding building blocks form a subset of a building-block-set consisting of a number Z of different preselected short k-mers each presenting a unique combination of a number k of bases of a preselected set of bases, characterized in that all the Z types of short k-mers in said building-block-set have a similar predetermined size k≥2 (plurality) of bases. The data encoding sections collectively encode a sequence of encoded alphabet letters S = (π1, π2,..., πn..., πΝ-1, πΝ). Each valid encoded alphabet letter πn at location n of the sequence S of alphabet letters is characterized by occurrence of a predetermined plurality of different types of short k-mers of the building-block-set in a corresponding location n along the data encoding sections of the plurality of molecular sequences of said population.

Abstract

A data storage system and method are provided, as well as systems and methods for fabrication, and writing and reading of data therein. The data storage system includes at least one population of molecular sequences including chains of basic molecular building-blocks, and defining at least one respective data-block encoding data in the data storage system. The data of the data-block is encoded in a sequence S=(π1, π2, . . . , πk . . . , πK-1, πK) of encoded letters {πk} associated with an alphabet Σ≡{σm}|m=1 to M, which are encoded according to the types of basic molecular building-blocks appearing at k respective location along storage segments of the molecular sequences of the population. The molecular sequences include a number Z of different types of basic molecular building-blocks {En}|n=1 to Z, while the alphabet Σ has a size M strictly greater than the number Z of types of building-blocks. Each alphabet letter σm is associated with a vector {Pmn}|n=1 to Z indicative of occurrences of basic molecular building-block En of type n in the alphabet letter σm. Accordingly each encoded letter πk at location k in the storage segments of molecular sequences of the data-block/population, is mapped to a corresponding alphabet letter σm by determining a match between the occurrence of basic molecular building-blocks of different types at that locations k of the molecular sequences of the population, with the vector {Pmn}|n=1 to Z associated with the alphabet letter σm. In some implementations the component Pmn of the vector {Pmn}m|n=1 to Z associated with alphabet letter σm is indicative of a probability that a basic molecular building-block En of type n, 1≤n≤Z, appears at the location k of the storage segment of a molecular strand of the at least one population in case the letter πk encoded at that location k corresponds to the alphabet letter σm.

Abstract

A high-efficiency, motorless purge system for closed-cycle absorption heat pumps, adapted for both absorption heat transformers and absorption chillers, using a series of valves to control the entry and exit of absorbent solution into a low-pressure, secondary absorption vessel. A small percentage of the total circulating solution is forced under pressure into the secondary absorption vessel via a spray nozzle, causing adiabatic absorption of absorbate vapor by the solution. Non-condensable gases accumulate in the secondary absorber until a certain vapor pressure is reached, upon which, gas, and possibly liquid, are transferred to an exhaust vessel having an exit vent for non-condensable gases. In an absorption chiller system, the secondary absorber has an internal heat exchanger to lower the temperature of the solution within, to facilitate the absorption process.

Abstract

A system and method for determining the condition of a thermal barrier coating on a base metal component, comprising the use of an induction coil to input into the metallic base layer through the coating layer, a temporally varying heat waveform, and measuring the temperature of the coating surface layer resulting from the input of the heat waveform using a temperature sensor disposed close to the surface of the coating layer. A controller correlates a signal from the temporally varying output of the temperature sensor with a signal corresponding to the temporally varying heat waveform, to determine the phase angle between the signals. The controller uses a mathematical relationship between the phase angle and the frequency of the heat waveform to determine the thermal properties of the non- metallic coating. Both the thermal diffusivity and the barrier coating thickness can be accurately obtained by this method and apparatus.

Abstract

An airfoil surface skin, comprising a network of a solid material, embedded in a base of deformable solid material. Fluid pressure applied to the interface between the network and the surrounding embedding material, opens an internal network of channels by viscous peeling of the surrounding solid from the network. The network is offset from the centerline the surround material, such that pressure driven viscous flow through the narrow channels generates two types of deformation of the skin - an in-plane elongation and a curvature of the skin plane itself.
