Abstract

In cases of acute and chronic kidney damage, BET (Bromodomain and Extra-Terminal domain) inhibitors, such as the JQ1 molecule, can be used to inhibit the UPR (Unfolded Protein Response) pathway and other inflammatory and pro-fibrotic pathways, thus improving tissue damage and restoring kidney function. Nevertheless, JQ1 exhibits toxicity and low specificity, so that in order to achieve a suitable therapeutic effect, high doses that are incompatible with a low degree of toxicity must be used. The present invention proposes a solution to the poor pharmacokinetic profile of JQ1 and its low oral availability that comprises designing and developing lipid-based nanoparticles that make it possible to encapsulate and selectively administer the JQ1 inhibitor in sufficient quantity to achieve the desired therapeutic effect and at the same time reduce its toxicity.

Abstract

The present invention relates to novel water-soluble BODIPY dyes by means of simple boron functionalisation. The known hydrophobicity of BODIPYs and most common analogues thereof represents an important limitation to its optimal use in some applications that require water solubility, meaning that it is of interest to obtain BODIPYs that are soluble in water or in highly hydrophilic media from conventional precursor BODIPYs. The invention relates to the structural design, synthetic access and water solubility of a novel group of hydrophilic molecular dyes belonging to the BODIPY family, which are advantageous due to the generality and ease of obtainment thereof from conventional BODIPY dyes (F-BODIPY-based), said production entailing the minimal disturbance of the photophysical properties of the starting dye, as well as a significant chemical and photophysical robustness, which implies the potential use thereof in photonic, physical and chemical applications in aqueous or highly hydrophilic media.

Abstract

Current treatments for surgical site infections that are caused by fungi or bacteria with antibiotics and antifungal agents are usually based on the prolonged intravenous administration or use of polymethyl methacrylate cements after removing the prosthesis and cleaning the surrounding tissue, which requires another surgical procedure. However, an administration system that avoids high body exposure to the antimicrobial agent and prevents the patient from having to undergo a new surgery would be more desirable. The present invention discloses 3D printed implants with biocompatible and biodegradable polymers comprising medicinal drugs with immediate-sustained release, having a reduced haemolytic profile, which easily adhere to the prostheses, exhibit a good in vitro efficacy profile against different fungal and bacterial strains and can be sterilised by means of UV light due to the thinness thereof.

Abstract

Controlling blood glucose is a difficult task that diabetic people usually need to carry out on their own. An accurate and timely prediction is vital to make decisions and recommend corrective actions. For this reason, there is a need to develop methods for efficiently and accurately predicting the glucose value that enables blood glucose control systems to be implemented safely using simple devices that are comfortable for the patient. The present invention discloses a non-invasive method and system for predicting glucose values, based on the estimation from a number of variables measured with an activity wristband. The system uses variables that are not directly related with glucose to estimate and predict glucose values and it generates warnings in dangerous cases of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a sensor device that comprises a sensor chip for sensing magnetic fields which has a sensor cell and further comprises a casing made of an encapsulation material, wherein the sensor chip for sensing magnetic fields is arranged and the sensor cell is not covered by the encapsulation material. The sensor device further comprises a layer of biomolecules that are arranged on the sensor cell and wherein said biomolecules are designed to capture a specific genetic or biochemical material present in a sample to then perform the subsequent anchoring of magnetic particles modified with the same capture biomolecules. Thus, the target genetic or biochemical material will be detected by analysing the magnetic field disturbance of the sensor based on the magnetic particles anchored to the surface of the sensor in a manner that is directly proportional to the amount of the target genetic or biochemical material present in the sample.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a system for housing laboratory animals, which can be adapted to small animals (mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils) or medium-size animals (rabbits, ferrets). For small animals, five peripheral trays (2) which each comprise a trough (21) are used, in addition to a separate trough (11). These six structures are arranged radially, thereby providing a central hexagonal tray (1) in communication with the peripheral trays (2) by means of a contact hole (3) located in a central wall (23) of each peripheral tray (2). For medium-size animals, the troughs (21) are eliminated and the separate trough (11) is replaced by a sixth peripheral tray (2). In both cases, the six elements are fitted, by means of bottom flanges, into grooves (61) made in a base plate (6).

Abstract

Bullet-proof vests consisting of polymeric shielding change their properties over time, as they are subjected to conditions of humidity, temperature, light, body heat, among others. This affects their resistance to the impact of a bullet, and therefore their reliability as protective systems. To discover their deterioration with the passage of time, ageing tests are usually performed under controlled artificial conditions; however, the correlation between natural ageing and accelerated ageing is a highly controversial subject; a method to provide reliable, objective information in real time on the condition of a protective vest would be highly desirable, in order to calculate its reliability and its remaining useful life.

Abstract

The present invention discloses a device enabling the measurement of the apparent temperature felt by a subject in the face of different stimuli. Hitherto, it has only been possible to measure apparent temperature in a qualitative manner, using measurement methods that present difficulties. The present invention discloses an innovative method and device to quantify the thermal sensations of a subject, and reveals how the subject interprets the apparent temperature felt, and how he/she conceptualises the physical magnitudes related to that sensation. To this end, measurements are taken that link neuroreceptive data and statements by the subject concerning these thermal concepts, in such a way that it is possible to quantify the perception of temperature by the continuous collection of data, eliminating subjectivity and enabling the establishment of a link between different variables such as sensations, verbalisations, and quantitative and qualitative scales.

It comprises the brief dazzling of the eye of a subject with a light source, to cause a temporary insensitivity to contrast, and to psychophysically, automatedly measure the contrast during a period of time and the moment in time when said subject detects successive visual stimuli, modulated in contrast and presented against a background of mesopic luminance. The responses provided by the subject during the recovery of the contrast sensitivity, measured by the cones of the retina, are recorded in order to obtain distinguishing parameters of this dynamics of recovery, and to compare them with a standardised database to detect disturbances in visual function typical of neurodegenerative diseases of the retina.

Abstract

The automatic detection of emotions via eating habits. Emotional states are related to eating patterns that affect us in our daily lives. For this reason, it is of interest to develop models that relate emotions with eating behaviour and changes therein. Most of the models require an interpretation of the emotion by the subject himself or by an observer. The present invention proposes the automatic detection of the user's emotion by using the so-called "Internet of Things". Specifically, the method is based on the use of a smart kitchen cupboard equipped with sensors and a data processing board capable of detecting the user's eating habit behaviour or changes therein, based on the food removed from the cupboard by the user.

Abstract

The present invention provides sustained release polymeric nanocapsules capable of releasing proteases such as collagenase with a controlled kinetic and a prolonged and sustainable effect over time(up to more than 10 days). Additionally, these nanocapsules protect the housed protease, preferably collagenase, against external aggressions maintaining its catalytic activity. In this way, this invention overcomes the currents problems associated with collagenase administration using a precise combination of monomers and cross-linkers, as described in the claims that allow the formation of degradable polymeric nanocapsules with collagenase embedded within. These capsules provide a sustained release of the housed enzyme thus providing a therapeutic improvement in comparison to current therapies thus decreasing the need for repeated injections or high collagenase doses.

Abstract

The invention relates to nanocrystalline titanium dioxide with mixing of anatase and rutile phases in proportion and/or spatial distribution controlled by means of laser irradiation. Titanium dioxide is a material with a wide range of applications for which a certain polymorphism is required, owing to which it is necessary to find methods for controlling the anatase-rutile phase transition, which allow the mixing of the two phases to be regulated. The invention also relates to the production of nanocrystalline titanium oxide with mixing of anatase and rutile phases controlled quantitatively and/or spatially with micrometric resolution by means of laser stamping. This phase control allows multifunctional and polyvalent devices to be designed on the basis of nanocrystalline titanium oxide and the different properties of the anatase and rutile phases thereof.

Abstract

Some applications of titanium oxide in the anatase phase are limited when they transition into the rutile phase when the temperature is increased, rendering of interest the existence of methods for controlling the anatase-rutile transition, which allow the mixing of the phases to be controlled and increase the range of working temperatures of the pure anatase in the form of nanoparticles. The present invention relates to the production of titanium dioxide with controlled mixing of the anatase-rutile phases based on doping with Al and Fe without incorporating other additives. The titanium oxide produced in this way can be applied to developments for catalysis, functional coatings, materials for energy, optoelectronic devices and different types of sensors.

Abstract

The concentration of butanol in fermentation broths is low and, consequently, butanol recovery with traditional techniques requires a large amount of energy. The invention relates to a low-energy-consumption method for the recovery of butanol. The method consists of an adsorption/desorption process using a polymer resin as an adsorbent. The desorption step is performed more efficiently and combined with condensation and decantation steps.
