Abstract

A method of fabricating a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center quantum sensing device based on electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing. A nanopipette with an aperture at one end is filled with nanodiamond suspension ink so the ink is present in a meniscus at The aperture, the nanodiamond suspension ink comprises nanodiamonds and solvent. The nanopipette is supported above a substrate having a back electrode. A DC is applied pulse between the nanopipette and the back electrode so as to generate an electrostatic attractive force resulting in the ejection of nano-diamond-laden droplets with sub-attoliter volume. The droplet lands on the substrate and is allowed to dry due to solvent evaporation. Using the method, the control of the number of printed nano-diamonds is at will, attaining single-particle level precision. This printing approach, therefore, enables printing NV center arrays with a controlled number directly on the substrate without any lithographic process.

Abstract

Disclosed are methods for constructing disulfide mimetics for late-stage cyclization of peptides. The disclosed method provides late-stage cyclization via thioacetalization of peptides containing two cysteine residues to form thioacetal group. These bonds are stable under acidic, basic, and reduced conditions. The reaction can use a broad range of cyclic ketones even acetone as crosslinkers. Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) alone can act as both the catalyst and the sole solvent, thus allowing most peptide sequences to be cyclized via the disclosed method. The disclosed method provides a number of benefits and advantages, such as the use of TFA as both a robust catalyst of the reaction and the sole solvent needed, the easy availability of acetone and of diverse cyclic ketones for use as the reactant, the good chemoselectivity and tolerance of native peptide to the reaction, and the fact that the resulting crosslinks are structural mimetics of disulfides.

Abstract

A novel medical image generation approach synthesizes thin-cut computerized tomography (CT) images from thick-cut CT ones as inputs. First thick-cut CT images are obtained by maximizing the pixel-wise intensity of five or more than five continuous thin-cut ones after image registration. Second, the obtained thick-cut CT images are fed into a generator block which adopts an encoder-decoder architecture, where each thick-cut image is encoded into low-dimensional embedding space before decoding into multiple thin-cut ones. Third, a discriminator focuses on distinguishing original real thin-cut images from synthetic thin-cut images. An adversarial mechanism between the generator and discriminator causes the discriminator's output to provide an effective gradient update of the network parameters for the generator to increasingly improve the generator's ability to synthesize higher-quality thin-cut images and in turn promotes the discriminator's discriminating capability.

Abstract

An opto chip for detecting a physical parameter of a liquid sample, comprising an optical structure monolithically integrated with a substrate layer and a functional layer, wherein the substrate layer is light-transmissive and configured to have an upper surface for receiving a droplet of the liquid sample and a lower surface bonded to the functional layer; and the functional layer comprises a light-emitting region and a light-detecting region with the light-emitting region being configured to emit measurement light. The light-detecting region is configured to receive reflected light derived from the measurement light and a signal reflecting the change in intensity thereof is converted into a photocurrent signal. A viscometer and detection method operated using the same opto chip technique. The need for complex external optical calibration is thus eliminated, making the viscometer easier to operate and reducing the overall size of the device.

Abstract

A holographic near-eye display device capable of multi-angle simultaneous illumination, comprising a light source module, a spatial light modulator (130), a beam splitter (120), an eyepiece, and a master controller (150). The light source module is used for emitting parallel light of different angles to simultaneously illuminate and cover an effective working region of the spatial light modulator (130). The spatial light modulator (130) is loaded with a hologram and used for modulating incident parallel light of different angles to form diffracted parallel light of different angles, i.e., virtual images of different viewing angles. The parallel light of different angles illuminates the spatial light modulator (130) and is modulated and diffracted via a computer-generated hologram on the spatial light modulator (130), and diffracted image light is converged by a second lens (140) to form different viewpoints for viewing by human eyes. The multi-angle simultaneous illumination does not require additional time-sharing control of an illumination unit, and when the size and position of human eye pupils change, a clear virtual image can always be seen, thereby achieving the objective of expanding an eyebox.

Abstract

A composite nanofiber aerogel (CNA) is formed from aramid nanofibers (ANFs) combined with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). These nanoscale constituents of the aerogel form 3D networks with high nodal connectivity and strongly welded connectivity joints between fibrils so that the structure has high stiffness and strength compared to other polymeric aerogels and successive breakage of crosslinks at the connectivity nodes affords energy dissipation while maintaining the overall structural integrity. A specific class of CNA with a specific solid content may be used to form a thin firm with a composite nanofiber framework (CNFF) that is useful in the manufacture of kirigami wearable electronics.

Abstract

The present invention provides a scalable method for achieving shape control of diamond micro-nanoparticles, comprising air oxidizing diamond micro-nanoparticles grown by chemical vapor deposition and/or diamond micro-nanoparticles grown by high pressure and high temperature. The present invention achieves the controllable morphology transformation of diamond micro-nanoparticles via air oxidation treatment. It has been demonstrated that a series of unique shapes, including “flower” shaped, “hollow” structured, “pyramid” patterned on the surface, and “boomerang” shaped, can be achieved by altering the air oxidation parameters, i.e., temperature and duration. The scalable production of these differently shaped diamond micro-nanoparticles represents a significant scientific breakthrough together with a high commercial value. The ability to produce diamond particles with desired shapes simply and cost-effectively will remove many obstacles to using diamonds for practical applications in nanophotonics, quantum computing, quantum optics, etc.

Abstract

A method for printing electronic components is based on the hybridization of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and laser sintering. The method involves printing a layer of composite copper-based thermoplastic filament on a base. Then the filament is subjected to a laser beam so as to selectively remove the polymer matrix in a restricted area after printing to leave only the conductive particles forming a highly conductive network and sintering the conductive particles with the laser energy to reveal the conductive copper. Then, alternately repeating the printing and sintering steps on the filaments one on top of the other until a complete component of arbitrary geometry, including both insulative and conductive structures, is formed layer-by-layer.

Abstract

Disclosed is a computer-implemented three-dimensional image classification system (CIS) for processing and/or analyzing non-contrast computed tomography (CT) medical imaging data. The CIS is a deep neural network containing multiple Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) blocks, which contain convolutional layers for feature extraction followed by CBAMs. The CBAM applies channel attention to highlight more relevant features and spatial attention to focus on more important regions. Max pooling layers operably link adjacent pairs of CBAM blocks. The output of the final CBAM block is passed to two terminal fully connected layers to generate a diagnosis. This classification system can be used to perform efficient diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma using solely non-contrast CT images, with diagnostic performance comparable to that of a radiologist using the current LIRADS system.

Abstract

Described are multi-resonance-thermally-activated delay-fluorescence compounds containing (i) a polycyclic aromatic/heteroaromatic ligand in which a plurality aromatic/heteroaromatic rings are linked by boron and nitrogen atoms and (ii) an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, with both ligands coordinated to a metal atom/ion that has a high spin-orbit coupling. The use of the high spin-orbit coupling of metals and/or metal ions facilitates the intersystem crossing and/or reversed intersystem crossing processes of MR-TADF emitters, thereby largely accelerating the rate of TADF and substantially shortening the lifetime of deleterious triplet excitons. The MR-TADF emitters can be used to fabricate blue to green emitting OLEDs.

Abstract

Sequences for detection of SARS-CoV-2 are provided and include example, SEQ ID NOs:4-8. The sequences are useful for amplifying the SARS-CoV-2 nsp8 gene in a sample, using Reverse Transcriptional Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (RT-LAMP) and it is preferably used in combination with a Cas enzyme/sgRNA pair and a reporter nucleic acid. The disclosed sequences can be use in methods of detecting SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acids in a sample. Generally, the specific gene sequence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA, herein nsp8, is amplified using RT-LAMP. The RT-LAMP products are scanned by the Cas12a-gRNA ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex. The RNP binds to the specific complementary to gRNA, activating the transcleavage activity of Cas12a. The active Cas12a system cleaves a short ssDNA reporter that is labeled preferably, with a fluorophore and a quencher on either end. Cleavage of the reporter separates the quencher from the fluorophore, and fluorescence that is detectable with the naked eye is generated.

Abstract

A steerable arm for use in endoscopic surgical procedures. The steerable arm cut from a tube of nitinol to provide flexibility and resilience by the structure into which the tube is cut. Typically, the cut tube comprises a spiralling coil, the loops of which are in contact on one lateral side of the tube and the tube is bent to open apart the loops on the other lateral side. The material which the tube is made of is capable of retaining memory of the bend. This provides a bias for restoring the tube to the bend whenever a force causing the tube to flex is removed.

Abstract

The subject invention pertains to a new method for measuring the elastic properties of microfibers by rope-coiling. Rope-coiling refers to the buckling of a slender elastic fiber caused by axial compression. A continuous flow microfluidic method enables the high-throughput measurement of the elasticity of microfibers by rope-coiling, where sample loading and unloading are not needed between consecutive measurements. In certain embodiments the coiling radius can be directly proportional to the elastic modulus of the fiber, facilitating calibration to measure fiber elasticity for high-throughput applications. Throughput can be thousands of times higher than that of a tensile tester, making possible an in situ, on-line measurement in a microfluidic production line, which couples the making of microfibers and the measurement of elasticity on the same line. The new method can also measure certain fibers with local variations in elasticity.

Abstract

A nano scale robotic system for single cell DNA sequencing of a strand of DNA positioned on a slide utilizes an atomic force microscope (AFM) having an end effector in the form of a cantilever with a tip. The AFM causes its cantilever tip to scan over the base pairs of the DNA strand. A pair of spaced-apart electrodes at the tip makes contact with opposite sides of the DNA strand and the current between bases of the DNA strand is measured by a current measurement system connected to the electrodes. An artificial intelligence-based data analytic system determines the DNA sequence based on the current from the current measuring system. The AFM tip is guided over the DNA strand by comparing compressed desired intensity local scan images and compressed actual intensity local scan images and using the difference to control the location of the tip.

Abstract

Methods for asymmetric cis-dihydroxylation (“AD”) of quinones to produce cis-diols of quinones with high yield (i.e. a yield ≥30%) and high enantioselectivity (i.e. an enantiometric excess ≥30%) are disclosed. The method uses an iron-based catalyst, such as one or more Fe(II) complexes, as the catalyst, and can be performed under mild reaction conditions (e.g. a temperature ≤50° C. at 1 atom in open air). The method generally includes: (i) maintaining a reaction mixture at a temperature for a period of time sufficient to form a product, where the reaction mixture contains a quinone, one or more iron-based catalyst(s), and a solvent, and where the product contains a chiral cis-diol. Optionally, the method also includes adding an oxidant into the reaction mixture prior to and/or during step (i), such as a hydrogen peroxide solution.

Abstract

An optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) system for visualizing water content deep in biological tissue uses an all-fiber 1930-nm hybrid optical parametrically-oscillating emitter. The emitter includes a tunable laser source whose output is amplified by a first erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). The output of the first amplifier is modulated with a Mach-Zehnder amplitude modulator that receives an RF signal with a nanosecond pulse width and a multiple kilohertz repetition rate. A second EDFA further amplifies the signal and passes it to a fiber circulator that in turn delivers it to a 1950/1550 mm fiber wavelength-division-multiplexing coupler WDM. The coupler introduces the signal to a cavity that includes a spool of highly nonlinear fiber and a Thulium-doped fiber amplifier TDFA. From the TDFA the signal reaches a 50/50 fiber coupler that sends part to a second output TDFA and guides part back to the cavity through a port of the WDM.

Abstract

A method and system for encrypting and decrypting authentication information about a synthetic Raman diamond tag formed with predetermined defects, impurities and/or strains in its crystal structure. A sender uses an optical spectrometer to establishing authentication identities of the synthetic diamond Raman tag and the sender's nature by means of Raman scanning. The sender then encrypts information about the synthetic Raman diamond tag and the sender, and transfers the Raman tag physically to a receiver and the encrypted information electronically to the receiver. The receiver first authenticates the diamond Raman tag and second authenticates the sender's nature. The receiver decrypts the encrypted information by reverse Raman scanning only if the first and second authenticating steps are successful.

Abstract

Described herein are compounds containing palladium (II), as the central metal atom, and tetradentate [N^C^C^N] ligands. The compounds are charge neutral, and feature a donor-acceptor structure where a pendant substituted amino group (such as unsubstituted diphenylamine or substituted diphenylamine) and a heteroaryl group (such as pyridine group) serve as donor and acceptor, respectively. This donor-acceptor structure introduces a set of low-energy singlet and triplet charge-transfer excited states with small energy separation allowing for efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence to take place.

Abstract

Devices and methods are provided that simplify and improve placement of stabilizing orthopedic pins, wires, and/or screws in the pelvis in minimally invasive surgery. Provided is a surgical instrument guide containing an adjustable friction clamp for positioning and securing a cannula, and a probe with a blunt, nonpenetrating tip. The probe and a surgical instrument held by the friction clamp are oriented at right angles to one another. In use, the blunt probe is introduced through a small incision and advanced by blunt dissection until the blunt tip is positioned at a desired anatomical landmark on the surface of the pelvis. A cannula inserted through the friction clamp is advanced until the tip of the cannula is within 2 cm of the blunt tip of the probe; an orthopedic pin, wire, and/or screw can then be inserted through the cannula to provide stabilization. The blunt probe may be cannulated.

Abstract

Broad spectrum antiviral peptides and composition including therapeutically effective amounts of the antiviral peptides along with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier are provided. The antiviral compositions show a strong broad spectrum antiviral effect, without resulting in viral resistance. Preferably, the antiviral compositions contain P16 or a P16-like peptide which can both inhibit viral fusion and endosomal acidification to prevent viral entry through the endocytic pathway. The antiviral compositions can be used in methods of treating diseases caused by viral infections, particularly respiratory viruses such as enveloped coronaviruses (SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV), the pandemic A (H1N1) pdm09 virus, avian influenza A (H7N9) virus, and the non-enveloped rhinovirus. The compositions are administered in a subject in need thereof in an effective amount to reduce or prevent viral replication in the subject, and thus reduce one or more symptoms of disease, disorder, or illness associated with virus.
