Abstract

A device for generating X-rays or electron beams is described. The cathode of the device is mounted on a ceramic insulator which becomes hot during operation, and the ceramic insulator is cooled by means of a fluid coolant flowing around the outside of the insulator at the remote end of the insulator, away from the cathode. The coolant conduit can be formed by flange rings, soldered directly on to the surface of the insulator, and the conduit may be shaped such that the coolant is in direct contact with the insulator. A method for manufacturing the device is also described.

Abstract

An X-ray emitter is described which is suitable for evenly sterilizing large volumes of material in a short time, the emitter having an elongated X-ray target window (22) and correspondingly elongated electron source (5) mounted in a vacuum chamber (1). The electrons from the electron source are accelerated towards the X-ray target window (22), which generates X-rays directed outward from the vacuum chamber (1) when irradiated by electrons from within the vacuum chamber (1). The elongated form of the electron source (5) ensures that an evenly distributed beam of electrons, with a substantially constant linear distribution over the length of the electron source (5), arrives at the elongated X-ray target window (2) such that a correspondingly even distribution of X-rays is generated from the X-ray target window (2). The X-ray target window (2) comprises a support substrate (23, 24), and carries an X-ray target layer made of a target material such as tantalum or tungsten on its inner surface. A process for manufacturing the X-ray emitter is also described.

Abstract

In a high-voltage X-ray tube, which a cathode, which is held at negative high voltage during operating conditions, and an anode, which is held at positive high voltage during operating conditions, are disposed opposite each other in a vacuumized inner space, the anode being attached to an anode insulation element in such a way that the anode insulation element has a cylindrical shape or a shape tapering toward the anode and includes an opening to receive a high-voltage plug, and a pipe structure is provided by means of which a coolant is able to be supplied to the anode. This coolant can be in particular insulating oil or another electrically non-conducting liquid. The pipe structure can, for example, be integrated completely into the interior of the anode insulation element, but can also be integrated into the surface of the high-voltage plug. A solution is also possible in which the pipe structure is integrated into an intermediate element, which is situated between the anode insulation element and the high-voltage plug.
