Abstract

An improved beam transport line is described for a proton or ion accelerator that guides protons or ions from the accelerator to a dose distribution system. The accelerator, beam transport line and dose distribution system are controllable by a control system. The beam transport line includes a plurality of electromagnetic elements and at least one of these is connected to a 2-quadrant or 4-quadrant power supply unit arranged to produce a current that can be varied by the control system in less than 50 milliseconds so that, when the beam energy is changed to move the beam-spot in the direction of the beam, it is kept focused on a target with losses along the beam transport line and dose distribution system not greater than 10% and variations in the total widths transverse to the mid-height of the beam-spot of the beam not greater than 10%. This solves the problem of how to transport a beam of rapidly changing energy.

Abstract

The application of a system (12) is proposed for the acceleration of ions to treat Atrial Fibrillation (AF), arteriovenous malformations (AVMS) and focal epileptic lesions; this system (12) is composed of a pulsed ion source (1), a pre-accelerator (3) and one or more linear accelerators or linacs (5, 6, 7) operating at frequencies above 1 GHz with a repetition rate between 1 Hz and 500 Hz. The particle beam coming out of the complex (12) can vary in intensity (i), (acting on the ion source (1) ), (ii) in deposition depth (by independently adjusting the radiofrequency of the power sources that feed the linac accelerators units) and (iii) transversally with respect to the central beam direction (by varying the current in the coils of two orthogonal scanning magnets placed upstream of the patient). The possibility of adjusting in a few milliseconds and in three orthogonal directions, the location of each energy deposition in the body of the patient makes that system of accelerators (12) perfectly suited to irradiation of a beating heart.

Abstract

The ion acceleration system or complex (T) for medical and/or other applications is composed in essence by an ion source (1), a pre-accelerator (3) and one or more linear accelerators or linacs (6, 8, 10, 13), at least one of which is mounted on a rotating mechanical gantry-like structure (17). Said isocentrical gantry (17) is equipped with a beam delivery system, which can be either 'active' or 'passive', for medical and/or other applications. The ion source (1) and the pre-accelerator (3) can be either installed on the floor, which is connected with the gantry basement, or mounted, fully or partially, on the rotating mechanical structure (17). The output beam can vary in energy and intensity pulse-by-pulse by adjusting the radio-frequency field in the accelerating modules of the linac(s) and the beam parameters at the input of the linear accelerators.

Abstract

A complex of proton accelerators, particularly devoted to medical applications, is disclosed comprising the following functionally interconnected components: a proton source, a cyclotron, at least one target, located either internally or externally to said cyclotron, a medium energy beam transport magnetic channel (MEBT), a radiofrequency linear accelerator (linac), a high energy beam transport channel (HEBT) towards an area dedicated to the irradiation of tumours with proton beams, as well as a modular system for supplying radio frequency (RF) power capable of feeding, independently two or more accelerating modules of said linac. An integrated computerized system controls said complex of accelerators so to carry out, either in alternation or simultaneously, both the production of radioisotopes - for medical, industrial and therapeutical purposes - and the therapeutical irradiation of, even deep seated tumours. Said complex of accelerators produces proton beams which, applying the recently developped 'spot scanning' technique, are more suited for the tumour irradiation than the ones produced by cyclotrons and synchrotrons. Moreover the proposed complex of accelerators requires a reduced energy consumption and, given its dual nature and presents a remarkable compactness that eases its installation in hospital and in research facilities dedicated to tumour diagnostics, brachitherapy and teletherapy.
