Abstract

The present application relates to the technical field of medicine. Provided is the use of integrin α5β1 as a target in the screening of drugs for preventing and/or treating bone loss. 8-isoprenyl flavone glycoside can replace a ligand fibronectin on cell surface receptor integrin α5β1, thereby achieving the binding of 8-isoprenyl flavone glycoside to the integrin α5β1, and thus improving the osteogenesis ability and the cell adhesion. Therefore, by using integrin α5β1 as a target of a drug for preventing and/or treating bone loss, and by means of the binding of 8-isoprenyl flavone glycoside to integrin α5β1, the activities of ALP, RhoA and Rac1 in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells can be significantly improved, thereby promoting the osteogenesis and the cell adhesion, promoting the development of drugs for bone loss, and providing a new strategy and routine for the treatment of bone loss diseases.

Abstract

In generating training and testing datasets for machine learning, manual annotation of a large volume of data is impractical and expensive. A machine-learning model for detecting carcinoma (CA) from a whole slide image (WSI) processes average cellular features of cells identified on the WSI. Each cellular feature is a descriptive statistic of the cells, advantageously allowing the training and testing datasets to be constructed without a costly annotation process of pixelwise labelling each cell on a WSI training sample. Apart from predicting a CA case or a non-CA case for the WSI, the machine-learning model is also usable to: identify a suspicious CA case for priority assessment if a non-CA case is predicted for the WSI; generate a tumor probability heatmap of the WSI for visualizing potential CA regions on the WSI to assist pathological assessment; and assess quality control of a triage system before implementation in clinical setting.

Abstract

In an indoor environment on fire, automatic deployment of sensors disposed on, beneath or over the floor to look upward the ceiling to observe a body of smoke and flame risen near the ceiling allows important information regarding states and dynamics of the body of smoke and flame to be gathered at an early stage of fire (e.g. before arrival of firefighters). By distributing the sensors over the indoor environment, the states and dynamics of the body of smoke and flame are monitored holistically (i.e. as a whole) even at the early stage of fire. Such information is useful to predict development of the fire. In one implementation, a sensor is held in an infrastructure sensor holder mounted on the ceiling during normal time. Upon detecting occurrence of fire, the sensor drops from the holder to land on the floor and orients a sensing direction vertically upward to perform monitoring.

Abstract

In a facemask (100), atmospheric air is filtered by a disposable surgical mask (180) to form respirable air. The facemask (100) has a frame (150) formed with an interior cavity (151) for storing the respirable air to be breathed by the user. A thermoregulation unit (110) mounted to the frame (150) provides air conditioning to the respirable air by using a fan (421) to draw the respirable air from the cavity (151) to a heat exchanger (425) that contacts a thermoelectric module (410) to thermoelectrically transport heat to outside the frame (150), thereby cooling the drawn respirable air and condensing water vapor therein. The condensed water vapor is trapped by the heat exchanger (425). Cool and dry respirable air is released back to the cavity (151), thus providing thermal comfort to the user during breathing. A heat sink (432) contacted with the thermoelectric module (410) is used with a fan (431) to efficiently dissipate heat from the thermoelectric module (410) to outside the frame (150).

Abstract

In estimating a position of a vehicle utilizing a global navigation satellite system (GNSS), it is desirable to exclude outliner GNSS measurements due to navigation signals via non-light-of-sight paths from the GNSS to the vehicle, but it leads to a distorted satellite geometry distribution. Complementariness between low-lying visual landmarks and healthy but high-elevation satellite measurements is explored to improve the geometry constraint. Measurements of an inertial measurement unit, low-lying visual landmarks captured by a forward-looking camera onboard the vehicle, and healthy but high-elevation satellite measurements are tightly-coupled integrated via sliding window optimization of system states used in a factor graph. To improve estimation performance, good initial guesses of system states are important. As such, initial guesses of velocity set and position set inside a sliding window are estimated simultaneously based on data of Doppler measurement, double-differenced (DD) pseudorange measurement and DD carrier-phase measurement as obtained in GNSS measurements.

Abstract

Peptide sequencing is important in decoding data stored in a data-encoded peptide. Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is particularly useful for peptide sequencing. In a computer-implemented method for sequencing the data-encoded peptide from an experimental spectrum, raw data of the experimental spectrum are first preprocessed to remove uninterpretable peaks to yield preprocessed data. A first set of one or more candidate sequences contending for a peptide sequence of the peptide is identified from a spectrum graph. The spectrum graph is formed according to the preprocessed data rather than the raw data for generating a fewer number of candidate sequences to thereby reduce a time cost in sequencing. The first candidate-sequence set is then processed to estimate the peptide sequence to thereby obtain a set of peptide-sequence estimate(s). Each estimate is verified whether it is invalid. The set of peptide-sequence estimate(s) is purged to remove any invalid estimate.

Abstract

A high filtration filter for filtering aerosols with low pressure drop across the filter and reduced cake formation when the aerosols penetrate through from an upstream side to a downstream side is disclosed. The filter (100) includes a plurality of module layers (110) and a plurality of separators (120). An individual module layer is an electrostatically-charged polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber mat. The electrostatically-charged PVDF nanofiber mat with charged nanofibers is configured to better capture aerosols. The plurality of module layers and the plurality of separators are alternatingly stacked and connected to one another. Each of the individual module layers has an appropriate fiber basis weight, thereby the aerosols are captured by the charged nanofibers and distributed uniformly across an entire width of the filter from the upstream side (41) to the downstream side (42). The fiber basis weight of nanofibers is selected to minimize the formation of skin leading to formation of a cake layer on the upstream side of the filter module. The filter also carries antimicrobials to disinfect bacteria, viruses, and harmful microbials carried by the trapped aerosols in the filter.

Abstract

In anomaly detection of a substance, a first set of chemical fingerprints is obtained. Each fingerprint in the first set is indicative of a plurality of physiochemical properties for a normal sample of the substance. The first set is converted into a cluster of data points in a multi-dimensional principal component analysis (PCA) plot. Each dimension of the plot is based on a principal component (PC) corresponding to one of the physiochemical properties. A profile pattern of the cluster of data points is constructed as a prediction model to identify a new sample with a chemical fingerprint outside the profile pattern as an anomaly. The prediction model is optimized using a second set of chemical fingerprints. Each chemical fingerprint in the second set is indicative of the plurality of physiochemical properties for testing samples that include normal testing samples and abnormal ones of the substance.

Abstract

A bio-inspired imaging device mimicking visual adaptation of human vision provides a large dynamic range in imaging an image. The device employs a neuromorphic vision sensor realized with phototransistors each being a field-effect transistor, a channel layer of which is an atomically-thin layer of two-dimensional semiconductor material. The channel layer is intentionally formed with defects trap states for trapping a portion of charge carriers generated by a light beam incident on the phototransistor such that intensity information of the light beam is memorized. A gate-source voltage directs the defects trap states to de-trap the trapped portion of charge carriers or to further trap an additional portion of charge carriers, allowing the phototransistor to exhibit a time-dependent excitation or inhibition effect on drain current to thereby enable the imaging sensor to mimic scotopic or photopic adaptation in imaging the image.

Abstract

The present invention provides a universal fluorescent probing system and method for result readout of loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) or reverse transcription-loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) in a closed-tube manner using at least three different types of universal quantum dot probes, including sulfonate-, carboxyl-, and amine-modified quantum dots (QDs). Detection mechanism of the present system and method relies on a co-precipitation of the modified QDs with magnesium pyrophosphate crystals (one of the positive LAMP/RT-LAMP reaction products) formed during the reaction. The present system and method are advantageous over the existing technologies in terms of simple preparation, low cost, as well as excellent universality, specificity and sensitivity.
