Abstract

Described is a method for the generation of plants having a white foliage phenotype, comprising the steps of: a. Providing a plant without a white foliage phenotype; b. Subjecting the plant of step a. to mutagenesis treatment to produce a mutant plant; c. Selecting a mutant plant of step b., wherein at least one copy of a glutathione S-transferase gene is dysfunctional; the selected mutant plant not being sexually propagated for more than 10 generations before step d.; d. Repeating steps b. and c. until all copies of said gene are dysfunctional; e. Selecting a plant with white foliage phenotype being homogenous for the said dysfunctional glutathione S-transferase gene. Further a plant, plant parts, isolated DNA, a molecular marker and the use of the DNA to produce a molecular marker are disclosed.
