Disclosed is a biomass stove for burning biomass fuel using a combustion furnace. The stove includes a gravity feed fuel holding tank for feeding biomass fuel to the furnace. The combustion furnace includes a primary combustion furnace and a secondary combustion furnace surrounding the primary combustion furnace, as well as a water jacket surrounding the secondary combustion furnace and an air jacket further surrounding the water jacket. A fuel holding device may be in the form of a rotating furnace that includes a support surface with one or more curved vanes thereon for moving gravity fed fuel. An ash removal assembly includes an adjustable ash grate and a fixed ash grate below the furnace. Adjustment of the adjustable grate relative to the fixed grate moves openings into and out of alignment such that ash from burned biomass fuel is output to an ash pan.

A tobacco production system is provided for producing useable tobacco material having chemical and physical properties acceptable to tobacco industry stakeholders, by growing tobacco entirely in a directly seeded system, under an intensive biomass growing system, mechanically harvesting above-ground portions of the plant a plurality of times during the growing season, curing tobacco leaves and stalks together, and processing the cured tobacco material to obtain cured leaf material suitable for use in tobacco products including, but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, snus, snuff, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco, reconstituted tobacco material, and other manufactured tobacco products.
An apparatus (10) is configured to control the distribution of tobacco strip in a charger (80) of a tobacco packing press (1, 2). The apparatus includes a housing (12). A plurality of ducts (14, 18, 20, 26, 28, 32, 34, 52, 54, 58, 60, 68, 70) extend from the housing (12) to the charger (80). Each duct (14, 18, 20, 26, 28, 32, 34, 52, 54, 58, 60, 68, 70) is configured to direct a portion of the air flow from the housing (12) to the charger (80). A plurality of nozzles (82, 84, 86, 88) are spaced around the perimeter of the charger (80). Each nozzle (82, 84, 86, 88) is connected to a corresponding one of the plurality of ducts (14, 18, 20, 26, 28, 32, 34, 52, 54, 58, 60, 68, 70). Each duct (14, 18, 20, 26, 28, 32, 34, 52, 54, 58, 60, 68, 70) may include a flow controller (36, 38, 46, 48, 62, 64, 72, 74) that is selectively openable and closable to direct the portion of the air flow around a perimeter of the charger (80) to distribute the tobacco strip in the charger (80). A method of controlling distribution of tobacco strip in a charger of a tobacco packing press includes providing an air flow and selectively directing portions of the air flow around a perimeter of the charger (80) to distribute the tobacco strip in the charger (80).

An apparatus for scanning and sorting tobacco leaves includes a conveyor to convey a flow of tobacco leaves. The flow of tobacco leaves includes acceptable and unacceptable leaves and undesirable particles. An air flow source lifts and accelerates the flow of leaves and particles to a speed at which the leaves and particles are separated. A duct contains the lifted and accelerated flow. A scanning device scans the flow in the duct and generates a signal upon detection of an unacceptable leaf and/or undesirable particle. A rejection device responds to the signal and forces the unacceptable leaf and/or undesirable particle from the duct. A method of scanning and sorting tobacco leaves includes conveying a flow of tobacco leaves including acceptable and unacceptable leaves and undesirable particles, lifting and accelerating the flow to a speed at which the leaves and particles are separated, scanning the separated leaves and particles to detect unacceptable leaves and undesirable particles, and forcing unacceptable leaves and/or undesirable particles from the accelerated flow of leaves. The flow may be accelerated to a speed of between 4,000 - 6,000 ft/min. The scanning device may be an optical or laser scanning device that scans the flow between 2,000 - 12,000 times per second.
